Ok...I'm kinda in a debate here...I have the money to get "if I wanted" a Nighthawk Talon...but I'm a Colt man...and I do see why spend a extra $1,500 on a gun that is no more reliable. What I need help with is what Colt I should get. I have a Commander...wich I love...but now it's Government Model time!
Here are my choices.....new 70 series, new 1991 series, or the new Gunsite pistol. If I could get opinions on why or whynot on these models that would be great. Thanks guys.

I agree with you. I see no need to spend another $1500 for any other reason than 'status'. And to me, a Colt still has more appeal than any of the others. If you now have a Commander, I would think that a Gov't would make the most sense. I would try to identify what you expect to use the gun for; informal shooting, competition, or action shooting, or even as a carry gun. The series 70 would make a great all-around gun. My local dealer has a SS 1991 for around $700 that I have been lusting for! And don't forget the Gold Cup. They are excellent for competition or even action shooting with just a couple of changes. If you are more concerned with a carry pistol, the Gunsite has a lot going for it. What ever you choose, I'm sure you will be a happy man. Before you are done, you will probably want one of each! (just like the rest of us!) Happy shopping. 44 Man

Yea I agree get another Colt but which one... a question that plages us all. All of your choices are good choices. I have heard many great things about the Gunsite so that is for sure a good choice.I have an ORM rollmark 1991A1 that is a great pistol and would be a little cheeper if you are on a budget and the Series 70 Repo are also excellent. I know this is not helping so with no budget and can get only one (to start with) I would go Gunsite, Series 70, and the 1991A1 in that order. Like 44 man said I would check out the Gold Cup Trophy (my personal favorite because it is good for anything from regular carry to competition). good luck with a tough choice and let us know what happens.

Since you asked for opinion, that's what you get. Just keep in mind it is probably worth what you paid for it. Hunter's well-known affection for his GC notwithstanding, I would go (and recently did go) for the Series 70 reissue. It's as close to the original you can get in a shooting weapon (the WWI and WWII commemoratives are closer, of course, but they are really keepsake/safe-queens, not shooters). Stone stock, out of the box, it shoots like a dream, one FTF in well over 300 rounds now. Groups well. Plus, as a review of my postings would show, I like blue ones...

Realistically, any one of the three would be great.

I would second the 70 series re-issue. It's a dialed in shooter that you can add whatever appeals to you and still have a classic look. If you like the contoured and dehorned look of the gunsite with all the bells and whistles you could go that way and have an awesome gun also.

I was going to turn my 70 series into the gunsite model, but I did not want my classic look changed with dehorning and front slide serrations for press checks.

Some people like the modern looking guns and some like the classic look. I think it all comes down to look. I'm guessing you could equip a new 70 series as nice as a gunsite for around the same price and pick and choose your options. The gunsite upgrades to a 70 series gun are about $500 for everything.

Have fun! Either way I think Colt is a better option. I could not bring myself to spend the kind of money Night Hawk charges even though they are great guns. I don't know what the future holds for Night Hawk, but I do know what Colt's past and future look like. Their guns will always gain value and be highly desired.

I would go with the series 70 also. The gunsites are nice , But I'm like the other posters on here I like the traditional look.

You could probably get the 70s series and a commander for that 1500!!!!!!!!!

At the risk of contributing to the "rumor mill", isn't there some speculation about the Gunsite coming out of prouduction? If so, it would be worth snagging one for that reason alone.

I've heard that too, Alan. But my source is world-reknowned for having the I.Q. of a half-glass of water. :D

I will join the others in support of a Mark IV/Series 70......current production.

I'm not going to help much here at all. But here is what I like.
I like the Gunsite, I have all 3 models. The Gunsite was their slowest selling model (so I've heard) and that is why they might not make any more. I guess the price was a bit too high for the market? After looking for a while, the Gunsite was my first choice for purchase.

I also have a bright stainless super 38 that I really like. She is soooo pretty, shoots good, too.

How about the Special Combat? I don't own one yet, but they look good and from what I read, they are accurate, they are fairly expensive.

My two cents is with the Mark IV/Series 70 as Slim has said. There is just something about that look and the history behind it that I like.

Hi

Well just to be different ....

Get the WWI repo model. It's a *real* Colt. To the extent that a Colt is a real 1911, the WWI is the Colt pistol that pretty much started it all. The pistol is made every bit as well as any of the rest. It shoots just fine, and I can see no reason to keep it in the safe. It's no more expensive than any of the rest.

I suspect a blued Series 70 will be my next Colt. I already have the WWI repo.

I like the WWI repro also, but I'd want to make it a carry pistol. To do that I'd need an extended thumb safety and some bigger sites. I'd hate to change a thing on that gun. I'd shoot it, but I'd hate to change it. It would kind of defeat the purpose of having a historical repro. One day I'll have the cash to buy guns for something other than business use. I'd love some historical type guns.

My money is on a Gunsite if you like the modern looks and options and a 70 if you want something in between that you can customize to your likes.

If I had to choose between the Gunsite and other comparable models option wise I'd take the Gunsite because it's a Colt. It would compare best with the SA TRP or a nicer Kimber Custom II perhaps a TLE. If you have $2400 the SA Professional model looks nice also. But it's not a Colt.

Colt!

Get them all and tell the wife it's in support of Homeland Security....she might believe you (on a good day)!

I'd have to say the Gunsite Pistol is the best choice, BUT.... if it were me, I'd choose the 1991 (as the least expensive) and send it to Ted Yost for the 1* treatment. In the end, you'll have a beautiful and reliable pistol at less cost than the Nighthawk.

Box stock = Gunsite
Altered = 1991 + Yost

thanks for all the input fellas....I'm really leaning (like most of you said) towards the 70 series. That is the look I like the best. looking at the Gunsite...I don't really like the front slide serrations and having all round edges does not really matter to me....shooting a Colt is worth getting bit :D I do like the extended safety...but the one on my Commander works just fine. So basically its wether or not I'm scared if I drop the gun that its gonna go off. Well have not heard of that "ever" happening. Yeah....70 series it is!

Good call on the 70 series. As far as dropping it you would have to have all the stars aligned perfectly to make it fire from the drop IMHO. I don't think it's going to go off everytime you drop it.

I can't say I've ever dropped a handgun. You will have to pry my handgun out of my cold dead fingers. Weapon retention is very important even post mortem.

Enjoy the 70 series!

I also forgot to mention I'd rather have a 70 series without the lawyer safety for obvious reasons. It's one design John Browning did not have in mind and it complicates a simple operating system. If it fails, which they do from time to time, your weapon will not fire. BAD THING

If you are just shooting targets that's fine, but if you carry to protect your life and the lives of others I would want to remove any possible unnecessary items to break. Murphy was a cop!

I would order a blue gold cup from buds for $829, put the 16lb spring in it and enjoy many years of shooting. Just my 2 cents.

Mod 70 to carry. Gold Cup for general shooting. Yes I carry a Commander XSE LW, but I thought this was a "full-size" discussion.

A Ser 70 Repro in stainless or if you're into blue, either a repro....... or a nice original one for around $1k to 1,200.

Here's a very lightly used 1974 production gun that I recently picked up for just under $1k.

Have to vote for the 70 Series Re-issue. Hard choice on the finish, though. I love my blue one, but would like to have it in stainless also like Rio Vista Slim. Just haven't warmed up to the Gunsite yet--too many others I'd rather have. Of course, others feel just the opposite!

One thing to keep in mind since the Gunsite is being fazed out (or already fazed out) it will appreciate faster. That don't mean much but all things being equal in performance it may mean something.

Mark IV/Series 70 is that different than the regular 70 series...or is it the same? On Colts website I only see one.

Mark IV/Series 70 is that different than the regular 70 series...or is it the same? On Colts website I only see one. They're the same - Colt is only producing a MKIV/Series 70 repro (blue and stainless, although the original 70 was only produced in blue).

There are some differences, though, between the original MKIV/Series 70 and the repro MKIV/Series 70. See the M1911 Forum Firearms Reviews test of the "Colt Series 70 Government Model 1911" for an excellent discussion of all this.
