Welcome to the forum and nice choice on pistols. You can call Kathy at Colt (1 800 962 Colt) with the serial number for the date of birth. Other than that what would you like to know?

The early ones came with the black stocks with the pony embossed in them.

black plastic handles
Plastic or rubber? If they are rubber, I'll second Paul.
The early 1991s (1992 thru ?) came with plastic stocks, but didn't have the Pony on the gun itself but the stocks.

Not likely a '91, if there's a Rampant Colt stamped on it.

Wow! A Colt without a pony on it? Who'd have thought it! 44 Man

There have been a few Colts through the years that didn't have the pony, the current Colt Custom .38 Super doesn't have one.
The 1991A1 models didn't have the pony, the 1991 models do.
