While I picked this new stainless 70 series up earlier this summer, I just got a digital camera, so here it is!http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g143/jmm5015/colt%20and%20taurus/DSC00003-1.jpg

Nice.
Yeah, I wish Colt would reproduce the S70 down to the stocks, instead of putting those double diamonds on them.

That, kind Sir, is one of the four Colts on my "gotta have... would sell a kidney for... it's makin' me drool all over keyboard" 1911 want list.
BTW, I bought the blued "sister" of this beautiful Colt... and all that did was make me want the stainless version more.

Hey thanks for the reply guys!
Way of the Gun, you know I haven't even gotten the chance to shoot her yet as I have been out of town, and I went to the range where I practice last week and it was closed! I'm going to try again this weekend so I'll report back if successful.
For me when I think of the 70 series four words come to mind... THE quinticential, classic 1911. The only thing I wanted to replace was the Chip Mccormick grips-OK but not for the 70 series, gotta have the boxin horsey for authentication. Man I can't wait to break this gun in...

If the original manufacturer - Colt - starts making a gun that they made before........ Is it a repro? I know there are a few, minor differences (stainless steel, for one), but to me it's just like a "new" Ser 70 - not a repro.

Hi
I suspect that both of the pistols shoot very well. If the series 70 repo came out of the Custom Shop then I would bet on it. My understanding is that they go down the "main line". If I'm wrong then - go for the series 70.
The other question is series 80 safety versus series 70. It's pretty tough to find anybody who loves the series 80 safety. The 1991 has the series 80 safety system. It's not an major thing to me, my GCT has all the series 80 stuff on it and the pistol works fine.
Between the 1991 and the 70 I'd go for the 70. Now if the decision was between a 70 and a GCT or a WWI repo - that's a bit tougher.

A new 70 SS or a new 91. Both would be good. I am looking for a new 70 series SS just because Colt never made stainless in the 70's. I think they came out with stainless around 1984.

Is there a definitive answer to this question yet? Despite being "custom shop", they still come off the same line as 1991's?

Hi
The only one I *know* comes out of the custom shop is the WWI repo. I don't have a Series 70 re-issue (yet) so I can't say about that one.

The later Series 70 custom replicas do come from the Custom Shop, the earlier pistols did not. My 2002 edition did not, it came in the standard blue plastic case.

The new 70's I've handled were assembled to a better level of fit than the older ones I've handled or owned. Especially noticable was the better barrel fit. I really like the new ones, wish I'd had one for the last gun I had built instead of using an old series 70.

Lamentably, I have not had my old Series 70 pistols since the early 1980s. Therefore, I am unable to compare those with my newer blued and stainless models. I agree with Lynnie, however, that the fit of the new ones is quite good, and the Colt Custom Shop is doing a fine job on the current production guns. Both of mine have trigger pulls in the 4 pound range, and are exceptionally accurate, if I do my part.

OD* has nailed this one... mine, bought in 2005, (a blued Series 70 "re-issue") came in one of the Custom Shop's blue cardboard box with gold lettering on top.
A caveat here, should a forum members buy one, is to make sure the dealer doesn't trash the white outer liner box that the blue Custom Shop box shipped in. It has all of the product identification codes, serial number, etc. on it.

I can't speak to all of them Swampy, mine is nothing more than a Series 80 without the Series 80 parts and the cutouts for them. Mine came with a long trigger, flat nylon MSH, double diamond stocks and it has the 10mm cutout frame rail.
I changed the trigger, stocks and MSH to make it look a little closer to the late 70s style pistol.

Apparently they're not all the same... or some "running" changes have been applied... and I seem to recall reading this in some postings about the Series 70 "re-issues".
Mine came with a metal arched MSH and a regular (short) trigger. Regarding the 10mm cutout frame rail, I'll have to check on that one.
BTW, that's a very nice photo of a very nice looking Colt!!! The "metal" color trigger looks great with the polished metal finish of the hammer... much better than the black trigger on mine.

My understanding is that the reason they come out of the custom shop is that they can circumvent the legal issues involved in producing a gun without the firing pin safety. Whether or not they 'fit' the gun better while it's there. I do not know. Maybe we need a new owner report, Bob! :D

I've heard and read that several times myself Jeff, but I have to wonder about the statements authenticity? The first Series 70 reproductions were not Custom Shop pistols.

Yes, it's true... I've resigned myself to a fate of Coltitis syndrome. I find myself waking up at night from a dream of having a new Colt... going to my gunsafe and discovering quite sadly that there is no stainless Series 70 reissue... my awake hours are spent muttering to myself that I must have a Colt WWI reproduction. My friends have all deserted me... won't have a thing to do with me, thinking I've lost my mind, always talking to myself. If they only knew how I suffer.
The next two pistols I buy must be a stainless Series 70 reissue and a WWI reproduction. But... wait... there is this Python down at my local gunstore that is calling my name. :D
It is hopeless... there is no cure. :nono:

Count me in on that, too! I am still awaiting my WW1 Replica (next day or two...) to arrive at the dealer and I have caught myself on numerous occasions trying to decide if I should get a stainless or blue 70 Series next. Probably gonna go stainless but if I don't have to work Saturday it may depend on what I find first. I can easily justfy either when I hold it. Patience and self-discipline sometimes take leave of me...
