The serial number doesn't have a prefix or suffix, nor a letter within the serial number itself?

I presume that the last 3 digits are G70. That would make it a 1976 production gun.

By the way here's the link to Proofhouse - serial numbers up to 1978.

I'm not sure that the smooth walnut grips were standard. I think that Colt had changed to checkered walnut grips with the medallion by 1979.

Way to go Jeff my friend. That is a fine looking Colt you have. If you have any more questions on the serial number give Kathy a hollar she can get it sorted out for you. Well glad to hear you got yourself another Colt, you never can have to many really. If you ask Larry he will tell you the same thing. :D

Hi

That's a nice pistol - you did well to find one. They are not easy to turn up in nice shape.

I would suggest giving Hunter's best friend in Hartford a call and see what she has to say about the pistol. You might find out something interesting. Besides - it's free !!!!

As bad as I hate to hear someone sold as fine a weapon as a Springfield, you sold two of em. :nono: But then you did it to finance a Colt  Thats just terrible. ;) Congrats on a nice Colt. I'm not impartial to Colt's, just partial to Springfield. Somebody has got to keep a finger jabbed in Hunter's ribs about Colts...

I saw that earlier (rarely a day goes by when I don't type in Colt Gold Cup in gunbroker) but without the box (a wooden display lined box) and fired it really isn't as collectable. I have seen 1 local complete and original, unfired for a grand.

One thing I will say for that auction listing. At least there are enough pictures for you to get an idea of what you are buying.

I just wish the previous owner hadn't reparked it.. grrrrr but it is still a part of history. They're ALL good. Just enjoy owning that piece of history. I've got all the "modern" guns I want. Now I "need" a WWI and a WWII - real ones.

Well, I finally made it to the range last Monday with the series 70 and ran about 80 rounds through it. I took along my 1991 ss Gov't as a comparison. The 70 shoots well, accuracy wise. My groups were a little tighter with the newer gun though. I was experiencing some stove pipe type jams with the series 70 however. Looking at the casings, I found most had dings on the brass, some were severely dinged. Upon getting home and cleaning the weapon etc. I found that the extractor was not holding a live round at all. It appeared that the hook on the extractor was all but gone! I did some searches on the forum for dinged brass and the solutions were always between the extractor and the ejector needing tweaking. I bought a new extractor from brownells, as well as a new recoil spring and installed. Now I need to shoot again to see the results. I should be able to get to the range this week.

jeff1124
21st October 2006, 14:27
Well, I finally got a chance to shoot it (the series 70) after a 9 hour stint of range duty at my gun club. I shot 37 rounds (63 rds thru my nickel Comdr and 10 rounds thru my deer gun in fast fading light) through it with no hiccups whatsoever, so I guess the extractor and recoil spring did the trick. Accuracy was a secondary issue, next time out I'll try and nail that one down.
