I've just purchased a new barrell from Storm Lake. I was planning on removing the barrel link and pin from my old barrel and fitting it to the new barrel. I can't seem to be able to get the link pin out. Anyone have any tips for me.
Thanks,

Make sure you have a bench block, or soemthing of the like to help give the barrel lug support.
Look for peening marks around the edge of the pin/lug area. If it's been peened, remove those the best you can, then knoch it out. It make take some good raps with the hammer, but it'll come.

Hi
A new link and pin are not a whole lot of money. Swapping then back and forth between barrels is a bit of a pain. If you leave the link and pin on your old barrel it's a lot easier to swap barrels in the future.
One tool that sometimes helps on a hard pin is a small gear puller. It lets you put a lot of pressure directly on the pin. You may have to grind the tip of the puller to match the pin. They are cheap enough that doing that isn't to crazy.

Thanks Bob. My old barrel is split so once I remove the link and pin I'll be done with it. I may have to try your idea with the gear puller as this pin is exceptionally tight.
Thanks for the idea.

Hi
Split barrel - Yikes !!! :scared:
Well that's one you are not going to save for the future. :nono:
What ever split the barrel may have put a bit of strain on the pin. It may be in there a bit bent. If so even if you get it out I would not re-use it.

I use a motorcycle or bicycle chain pin tool that i've modified to push out the link pin. ;)

I successfully removed the pin and link with a punch and hammer this morning. I've installed it on the new barrel and everything seems to be working nicely. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

I'd be interested to know more about your split barrel. Could you post a few photos of the barrel and history of its demise?
Thanks,
