View Full Version : Question on a couple issues with my Gunsite

I've got a Colt SS Gunsite 5" Gov. I got it new and have put 500 rounds through it. The first issue has happened twice in the 500 rounds. I guess it would be called an ejection problem. The extracted casing is jammed between the breechface and the top of the ejection port. The casing is turned backwards with the primer end facing the chamber and bullet end facing the breech face. Is there a common place to look for this problem?

The second issue is failures to return to battery. This has occured 8 times in the 500 rounds. Its always the first round when loading a new mag. Its never happened in the course of fire. I can simply pull the slide a little to the rear and let go and it will then go fully into battery. For this I checked my extractor tension but it seemed fine to me. A loaded round will stay put under the extractor hook and when I shake the slide the bullet moves freely but does not fall out. Where would be a good place to start looking for this problem? Thanks.

Is there a shock buffer in this gun? If there is, remove it. Also, I would make sure that the recoil spring is 16 lbs, unfortunatelly, the only way I know this can be done, is by replacing the spring.

Also, check this thread:

Check the hook to wall depth. Much more than about .036 will cause'em to hang up, especially with an extended ejector.

John, thanks for the info. The gun does not have a shock buffer installed, I do not use them. I'll see about changing the spring. I'll have to wait to the weekend to try it out.

I measured the wall and it is .030. I also rechecked the extractor tension and if anything it is a little loose. It will hold a loaded case when shook but the round sure does wobble a lot.

I didn't make it to the range today but I managed to get around to changing out the recoil spring and looking at things closer. The original recoil spring that came with it new is 32 coils with a wire diameter of .046". The new Wolff 16# has 32 coils and is .0445 diameter. The new Wolff is about 1.25" longer than the factory spring. I'll for sure get out tomorrow to test but hopefully this fixes the problem.

Hi

What kind of ammo are you using?

I was using CCI Blazer Brass 230 FMJ.

Wall to tip...that's a littletoo short. .032 is about the minimum.

I've got a Wilson BP Ext. that measures .034, I'll put it in and give it a try.

Hi

I sure would check out Tuner's extractor dimension issue.

You might also grab a box of Winchester White Box ammo at Walmart. It would rule out any odd issues with the CCI. I have never heard of trouble with it. I have used a lot of the WWB and never had a problem with it.

I only had a chance to fire 100 rounds with the new extractor and recoil spring but I didn't experience any of the before mentioned problems. I plan to fire more next weekend before I call it good. Thanks for the help.

You mean the problem can't be fixed by putting in a stronger recoil spring? :D
