View Full Version : Extractor issues on FTF

I picked up a used Hi-Standard for a good price and the first time at the range, had a few failures to feed. I suspect the extractor needs some adjustment since working a empty casing under the extractor is a little tight. The gun ejected everything fine and I'm using Metalform 7 round mags with the dimple which work flawlessly with my Nork and Mil-Spec.
I'm taking this gun to the range this week so what should I be looking for if I get some FTF?
Thanks in advance.

Howdy Boog.
Too much extractor tension usually results in a failure to go to or return to battery. The breechface guide block dimension can mimic it though, so see if the gun goes to battery a little better with the extractor removed.
Another issue that will mimic excessive tension is the area behind the hook...the tensioning wall...protruding too far from the edge of the guide block, usually due to the front pad dimension letting the hook sit too close to the breechface centerline.
Check the feed/return to battery function without the extractor and see how it goes. We'll check a couple other things from there.

Hi
If you can get a close up photo of the extractor and breach face that might help figure out what's going on.

Do what Tuner said and as long as you have your extractor out clean out the tunnel it goes in realy good , I had the exact same problem "develope" with my CD . After cleaning the tunnel the gun is running great again .
Tuner must have been tired when he made his post he almost always mentions cleaning the tunnel with this complaint .

Tired...Stressed...Full plate. Septic system failure in one of my rent houses...Deadbeat tenant in the other who has two bad checks to his credit, and will be almost 2 grand in arrears come October the 5th. One of my Collies has surgery scheduled for tomorrow to give it the third shot at stopping a recurrent nail bed infection...and yesterday evening, his brother stepped on one of his feet and triggered a savage fight...which drew blood from both before I could get in amongst'em and break it up. I tell ya...I dunno how much more I can take this month. September of aught-six will be one I'll be glad to see go.

Felt the same way about Sept. 05...Katrina. Blew my range all to s***.
How do you check extractor tension? Is there a 'field' way to do it without gauges?

In the Technical Issues forum there is an article on how to check your extractor tension. Read it.

Sorry to hear your problems old friend. I am sure only better times are ahead.
