Anyone ever try automotive grade base/clear to finish a slide? Have a couple of leftover colors from painting projects. The stuff seems pretty tough just wondering if anyone else has had the same idea :D

Auto paint is fine for cars. Even if it is applied professionally and toxically you will find that it results in a thick finish that will probably bind up the gun. Auto paint is not designed to be a wearing surface so it isn't suitable for a gun finish. Finally, auto paint tends to discolor when it absorbs oil. The new GutKote type finishes really ARE meant for guns and are quite remarkable products.

Thanks Lazarus, I was mostly thinking in the lines of spraying it on the outside of the slide on my para 40. I'll check out the stuff you mentioned. Have you used the stuff?

I haven't finished any of my guns with GunKote, (just a sucker for blued steel and wood stocks). But the guns I have examined look very good. The good news is that you can apply the finish yourself without an auto body shop full of equipment and get good results. And, it comes in lots of colors. Most gun finishers offer this process now. The DIY paint can be obtained from Brownells.

If Hawkmoon can find the required free time, we should have a review of the Gunkote products soon. We have the samples already, so it's just a matter of finding the time to do the test.

I think I'll order a pint of the black and OD green just to try it out. Now I just need to find the MEK locally. I doubt I would want to pay for haz-mat charge to ship.
