View Full Version : EGW FPS radii?

Without having to read through 41 pages of recoil reduction again, I need a confirmation please... on two different 1911's. One a 5" Kimber target and the other a .460 Rowland conversion. On the .460 I believe the recommendation was for a 1/16" or .0625" radius.
On the target model, which will shoot pretty standard loads (no heavy/hunting type loads) what radius should I use on that one? 1/8"? Am I remembering correctly?
Many thanks

You can use the 1/16th radius on any 5-inch, .45 ACP gun, including the target pistol unless you load your ammo down below the levels of full slide function...and then you can go to a lighter recoil spring to get it back.
Mine do fine with 200-grain LSWCs loaded to 775-800 fps and the 16-pound recoil spring. Loaded to 650-700 fps, I'd go to a 14-pound spring. Can't get any closer than that, since I don't loade'em down that soft...but it'll getcha in the right neighborhood.
The same can be used in Commander-class pistols with a cut-to-length 16-pound recoil spring. With an 18-pound spring, you may be getting into an
"iffy" area on function, and may want to go with the .075-.080 radius. (5/64ths inch)
The 1/8th radius is the one that I reserve for Officer's Model class 3.75-inch guns, though some will function just fine with a smaller radius.
Before making a judgement call...if you install a new mainspring and recoil spring at the same time...lock the slide back and leave it overnight to allow the springs to take a set. I've seen short-strokes occur with new springs used together with the small radius, then settle in and start working after a hundred rounds or so.

Yes, the sticky entitled "Amazing Reduction in Recoil...", the very first sticky I might add, is at 41 pages and counting. George of EGW just posted the info that he will be coming out with a pre-radiused stop very soon, for those of you who are squeamish about whether the radius should be .062" or .093".
Frankly, when someone has an incredible resource at their feet and refuses to stoop down to pick it up, it fills me with very unpleasant thoughts which cannot be articulated further on this board. It is one thing to ask an intelligent question. But some of us are special, and won't be required to inconvenience themselves by reading or studying the material sitting in front of them.
But, I should temper my judgement and remember ECC 9:11
"....the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise..."

Thank you very much Tuner. I will notify my smith immediately since he is waiting for me to call him in order to continue on my build.
Lazarus - in order not to put out the one eyed king, I did a search for George for all posts and found only one: http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?t=18522
I must humbly and sincerely apologize for not seeing what I cannot find and if I have put you out, then please accept my deepest apologies. But like I said, I just needed confirmation without having to read all 41 pages of what is obviously a wealth of information. I don't consider that easy information at my feet, I consider that a couple of hours of reading and I am in a time crunch - not that the King would need ever consider anyone else's situation or schedule or reasons for not doing what he would have them do.
If you are bothered by my question, let me be the first to invite you to not read any more of my posts and please do not reply to any thread I start, lest they cover some tiny tidbit of information that seems blindingly simple to those that obviously already know everything. What a burden it must be to know every danged thing.
I personally would much rather help someone with an easy answer to an easy question that preach to them how easily they could find it themselves. My Daddy used to do that and I assure you... you are not my Daddy. But that's just me... I like to help. I don't like to be a knowitall.
And the next time you want to call me "special", why don't you just PM me and we can get on the phone and discuss it in greater detail.
One might do well to read Proverbs 19:11 too

I used 5/64ths in 2 BE and 2 IPSC guns...works well for me.

MArkbo,
Works for me. Personally if I just need to know what time it is, I'm not going to read a book about how to build a watch.
ON a more meaningful note, I have the smaller radiused FP stop on my Commander and it has made a noticeable difference.
Regards!
