I am a strong supporter of American-made products and purchased 4 Colt 1911's during the late 80's and early 90's. I like to support traditional manufacturers who have demonstrated their ability to survive for many years. I was disappointed in both the functioning and accuracy of these pistols and have sold 2. Has Colt quality improved in the recent years or do I switch to 1911's by Kimber, SIG, S&W, etc? What has your experience been?

My new ones functioning and accuracy are as nice as my Colt's made in the '40s & '50s. Accuracy, is actually better.

their ability to survive for many years
This sure doesn't apply to Colt's! Colt's, like almost all firearms USA manufacturers goes belly up every few years and someone buys their assets and trademarks at the bankruptcy sale.

I'm hard pressed to buy anyhthing but a Colt. I did learn one thing from a Springfield a couple of years ago. Never buy a gun without first having it in your hands. A good look over and function test can tell a lot about the gun.
I prefer the finish on Colt pistols. Their bluing is excellent. At least the ones my hands have been on. I now have three of them and love each and everyone of them. The Gold Cup is the best shooting 1911 I've ever owned and probably ever will own. My officer's model has been on my side since my wife bought it for me seven years ago, and my new Commander shoots great and looks great. I couldn't be happier with them.

I own a 6" Colt Anaconda 44 Mag, 70 series Colt CDR Lightweight (45) and a new Colt Special Combat (45). They are all great guns and very accurate. As a matter of fact, I call my new Special Combat my SNIPER pistol. Nice tight groups @ 60' and very forgiving. In my opinion, it is very hard to beat a Colt when compared to anything straight out of the box. I think that you kinda need to remember the premise for which the Colt 1911 and a1 was made. If you want a Colt built for the range straight out of the box, take a look at the XSE or the Special Combat.
Just my two cents worth,
