I got my Colt series 70 Gold Cup back today. I had let someone do work on it and they made sort of a mess of it so I sent it to Bob Rodgers for a fix. He's great! It's in great shape now and has new wood to celebrate the occasion.
Thanks Bob!!! ;)

This gun was Accu-Railed by Bob Krieger and has had most everything changed in it. Cylinder & Slide hammer/sear/disconnect, S&A magwell, Dlask trigger, Kart barrel, Wilson rear sight & dove tailed front patridge sight, Ed Brown ambi & grip safety, Novak grip screws and a Dawson Precision Tool-less full length guide rod. (+a bunch of other little parts)

It sort of goes well with my 80 series Gold Cup which was pretty much junk when new and now shoots like a champ.

Colt ambi safety, Ed Brown hammer & grip safety, herrett's grip panels, S&A magwell, Videki trigger, Briley barrel & spherical bushing. All the series 80 parts seem to have fallen out at some point...........oh well.........it's strictly a range gun. (with a super nice 3# trigger pull)

I guess I may as well put the Gov't model up too.
Bob Rodgers built this and did a magnificent job!

you truely own some fine looking weapons Joni!!! :D

I honestly don't remember the turn around time. The guy that had the series 70 GC took about 4 months longer than promised but it was winter anyway so I wasn't too worried about it.
The best thing about these three guns is that they will shoot as well as my LB or RRA!

Hi
So who's grips are on the Gold Cups?
Bob
Joni Lynn
19th September 2006, 21:48
70 Series is a place in Ohio, I don't have the info handy, the 80 series are by Harold garrison of Herrett's on wood from Cantwell wood in Chico............sadly both are now deceased.

The Gold Cup came out nice Joni. You should post a warning in the title for Hunter though. He's gonna need medication to get through this thread.

Just in case you were wondering, the answer is yes, I had applied with Lynnie for adoption, but she turned me down, when I told her I had a cat. OK Lynnie, the cat and the kittens are gone now. Could you please reconsider my application?

Thanks!
The revolver stocks are from Herrett's, Jordan Trooper style.

Hi
So how long has it taken to accumulate this pile of handguns?
There was a guy who used to show up at OGCA with a collection of one Luger from every year of production. I always was a bit amazed as I walked by.
I think you may have him beat !!!

Very handsome examples of the pistolsmith's art Joni Lynn. Bob Rodgers may soon be one of the year long wait list smiths with that kind of work.

Does your hand remember how to hold the gun, without "memory grooves" on the beavertails? Seriously, while I understand the function, I just cannot abide that hump, and the guns look so much better without it!

I prefer my 1911's without any speed bumps. I only use the S&A magwell as a grip extension since I have large hands.
I started with my 1911's in about 1990 or 1991. Prior to that was shotguns, rifles and revolvers............as many of each as I could manage. ;)
Joni Lynn
20th September 2006, 17:48
This one originally had the speed bump grip safety but I had my gun Dr 'fix' it. Now it's much better.
It's my 1.5" LB P2.

Any good gun ranges in your area? Indoor? Outdoor? Ones that allow you to pick up your own brass after shooting?
pa_guns
20th September 2006, 21:53
Hi
The PA Game Commission range up the road is an amazing place. Once fired brass all over the place. I have a couple of big boxes full in the garage after only summer's worth of collecting.
Bob

20th September 2006, 21:58
They let you shoot 1911's there? The game lands range here doesn't allow any gun that's not legal to hunt with and no more than 3 rounds in the gun or they bust ya!
pa_guns
20th September 2006, 22:18
Hi
Here there are two ranges. The rifle range has the three round limit on posted on it. I have *never* seen anybody busted for violation. Guys show up with 30 round banana clips on AK's over there.
The pistol range is *specifically* exempted from the 3 round limit in the posted written rules. You can shoot any normal pistol there. They would have a hard time shutting it down. They would have to bust the 80% of the local law enforcement guys who use it as a practice range.
Great place to get your PA taxes back in .40 S&W brass....

Joni;
I don't mean to be a smart allicK but, I didn't know 1911s had a cylinder I guess you were thinking about one of your S&W revolvers when you said that
maybe? Also I would like to know where I can get some nice wood like that and I always thought you young ladies liked pretty things including wood.

cylinder and slide is a name brand parts manufacturer for pistols, so what she meant was that the sear/disconnector were from the company cylinder and slide

If I can ever find a pattern for 1911 grips, I could make em, but I want the pattern or at least a blueprint for dimensions, and I can make em, out of whatever wood I can get my hands on. I have some black walnut that I would love to make a set of grips out of.

I hope you find what you need and I want the first set you make cause I bet that Black Walnut would make some great looking grips. I need a new set for my DW PM2 cause when I got it the grip on the left side had a crack in it. And of course I know you get the first set and I'll take the first you sell.

Well if I ever do it, I will get you the first set. I would love to be able to do that. I saw a set of blueprints/diagrams to make a set online several years ago, as a matter of fact I was looking for them when I found this sight. Forgot where I found the grips but ended up here...

Hi
From what I have seen most people seem to use a duplicator with a "known good" grip as a reference. A CNC also could do the trick, but the grip guys seem to be a little more "low tech".
I seem to recall that there is some kind of strange process involved in "curing" the wood used in pistol grips. Something about soaking in salt water for a couple years ... Could be hallucinating again though.
Bob
gottripletsNC
20th September 2006, 22:53
The salt would be for curing the wood by means of drawing the water out of the wood itself, thereby making it hard, and eliminate the possibility of rot. By making it harder it would also prevent chipping and splintering some when trying to checker it, so I guess that may be right. I don't have the tools to checker any grips, I could do it with a smooth wood rasp, but man that would take forever, and I couldn't guarantee it would be straight. I would just do smooth grips, but all the wood I use for anything has been dried a while. Soft wood is hard to use when making good furniture, the black walnut made a beautiful mantle for my Mother's fireplace. That was her Christmas present one year.
Now to get back to the thread, Joni what kind of wood is that in that grip, I like it, it has an interesting coloration.

Hi
Checkering is one of the most tiring things I have ever tried to do. I'm no good at doing it by hand. Some people are *very* good at picking up a little file and going at it.
There are machines that will cut a checkering pattern for you. I have never seen one except at a show. I certainly have never been able to afford one.

This guy here has a good tutorial on making your own grips.... Also sells a nice jug to hold them while sanding, and a step drill to put the holes in... http://www.blindhogg.com/

Cylinder & Slide is a pistolsmith and parts supplier. As the name states, they work on revolvers and pistols and do fine work. I like their hammers and their matched set is very nice.
