Gentlemen,
I finally took the plunge and decided to fit a new Wilson Bullet Proof extractor and firing pin stop into my Springfield Champion 4" Mil-Spec.
I have studied the Jerry kuhnhausen manuals for years and used his expertise along with the technical library on this forum for the installation.
Each time i broke down the SA for cleaning i just could not visualize the factory extractor holding up. The factory unit did not seem to fall into the quality category. Upon first dressing the hook area and setting the tension with a fully loaded dummy round i noticed a problem. After putting the gun back together and running dummy rounds through it the extractor clocked to the righ (clockwise) to the 12:30 position. I had a new firing pin stop on hand which had to be dressed with files and emery to get it to fit properly. The area near the ejector had to be dressed for it protruded into the grove where the ejector travels. Also the right side of the firing pin stop had to be dressed so when it went into the slide the last 1/64 of an inch or so it was just slightly snug. The gun throws the full rounds where i feel they should be according to my other pistols. The tension on the extractor seems to be around the one pound mark or possibly a little more.
I will test fire it today. The next assignment is to change out the factory firing pin with a new one. It has the small 9mm/38 super pin which i do not like but have to live with.
I will keep you guys posted on how the Springfield functioned. I know tha the factory firing pin stop was very loose and let the extractor rotate. I feel by what i have read and the forums you do not need a rotating extractor. Thanks for the good information from the gun experts. Curt
