i've read about adjusting extractors and understand that but is that all i need to do? i'm replacing my stock springer with a wilson bulletproof. on the wilson the hook that grabs the case is shaped different than the stocker. wilson is pretty much square with sharp corners. the stock extractor has a rounded bottom corner among other shape differences. is the shape of the wilson better or should i adjust the shape slightly to match stocker? thanks

Howdy Scotty,
Although the aftermarket extractors are theoretical "Drop-In" parts...they usually don't. Most coan use a little modification in key areas inorder to give optimum performance. Simple to do with hand tools, but difficult to describe accurately in print...and it would take up a lot of bandwidth to boot.
Basically, it's nothing more than creating camming surfaces and clearance angles to allow the incoming round to feed more smoothly without compromising good tension on the case. I'll go find a link to a drawing that will give you an idea of where to start...but be aware that the angles in the drawing are exaggerated for illustration...and There are a couple of other mods that I do on extractors in order to make them act more like the spring that they should be instead of the rigid piece of steel that they have been for the last 25 years or so.
I'll edit this response and add the link. Stand by...
EDIT: Sorry...I can't find the link to the drawing, but I do have it saved and can send it on an E-mail as an attachment. Shoot me an address and I'll have it on the way.

Go to M1911.ORG, go in the Home Page, then select "Technical Issues". You'll find what you want there.

That's the one! One word though...The beveled area that applies tension to the case rim is WAYYYY too big as shown in the drawing. I take the bevel
only to the point that the non-beveled part goes just past the bottom corner of the hook, and instead of gradually rounding it, I leave it in a ramped configuration and lightly radius the corner that it forms at the top....and I radius the bottom corner of the hook instead of using a bevel there.
