View Full Version : Pistol storage shelves for rifle safe

I recently purchased a Sentry Safe, 14 rifle safe to slow anyone down. Sentry is by no means top of the line nor the absolute bottom either, but it will slow someone down. I also have ADT security (motion and door) with land line and wireless backup connection, so by the time they get into or get ready to transport the safe, the posse should be here. There is only one problem, the safe is primarily for rifles, not pistols and I have more of the latter. I found a solution. Went to Bed Bath and Beyond and picked up their plastic Desk Top Chest - it has three drawers per chest (13 7/16W x 9 11/16D x 10 3/8H) each drawer will hold at least 2 pistols. You can stack at least 4 stacks of three or minimum 24 pistols, and they are transparent, so you can see the pistol. The safe can still hold three rifles, one 18" shotgun, and a tricked out AR-15. Thought I would share, if anyone has a space problem.

Could you post a pic of one next to a gun for comparison?

There are two shelving units in the safe. Sorry, hope you don't get a krick in your neck trying to figure this out. :o
Hope these pictures make it a little clearer.

Neat Idea. Wouldn't work for me, but whatever works!
Just for anyone else struggling with this issue, I have spent more money than I care to admit on different racks. I found the perfect ones. From Lowe's store, I got several Pot top racks. It is just a small plastic coated wire rack made to hold cooking pot tops. They also happen to hold auto pistols perfectly in a verticle position so they really maximize space usage.
And for a fraction of a couple of the custom wooden racks that didn't hold them up anyway!

ARGHHHHH!!!!!
The $$$$ digital I gave my GF broke on vacation and the old one I have had for years JUST quit working! I can't get it to take a pic this morning. Grrr!!!
I can take a pic with my phone, but I don't know how to download it to my computer. I will try that.
Guess that means I am going to have to get the Minolta fixed. :o

Here's a rack I bought to put a few pistols in.
By the way, this does look like a lid rack.
No comments about the ugly range stocks on my pistols. :nono:

That's the type I was talking about. Mine look a little different, but not much. I find that if you place them upside down, the sit better without leaning over and stay in place. If you have to shove one of these all the way to the back of the safe, you can place them muzzle out or alternate. Holds full size revolvers as well as autos.
Thanks Dave!

I actually use this one for pan lids. I'm not sure of the name of the place I bought it from, I think it came from one of those specialty stores that sells kitchen stuff and storage bins, etc, but I bet it was cheaper than the $20 one made for pistols that I have pics of up above. Sorry about the pistol, but that's what I have to carry, the real guns are locked in the safe.

That looks like an S&W 699. And that is how I place mine - upside down like that. And you are right... that is a pan lid holder and they cost about $6 at Walmart. They can be had at Target too. The gun specific rack looks a bit heavier made, but I can fill mine up and though it bends a bit in the middle it still holds them all in place.
The only guns that they won't hold are large scoped revolvers and I have a molded foam rack from Sportsmans guide that holds them upright.

Absolutely!! I am an equal opportunity purchaser. :D I would be remiss without examples of Gaston Glock's handiwork (models: 21c, 23, 36, and 38 - my daughter talked me out of the model 19). There are also examples of S&W and Kahr in those boxes. John, you need to make the move - to indulge your affliction. You know what Hans Selye said about stress.... :nono:

MLee, I have no idea who Hans Seyle is, let alone what he said about stress. But if he has any idea about stress, he must have twins also. :D :)
As for making the move, I keep thinking about it. The only problem is that my wife is in love with Greece and the Greek sea, so she is not exactly thrilled with the idea. Of course, she can stay here, right?

Dr. Selye, was born in Vienna (1907) and continued working later in life in Montreal (1982) on his theories that certain types of stress may cause many of the symptoms of and actually cause disease.
I totally agree with your wife's feelings about Greece - it's next on my list of places in Europe to visit. Have been as close as Sienna - maybe next time - I have to compete with my wife's love of Paris. Can't leave the wife behind :nono: This adds to stress and old Hans again. The next best option is to find a place in the US that is gun friendly and as close to Greece as possible. Possibly Florida - gun friendly but probably more humid than Greece, and they have the occasional hurricane. Southern California would be an option, but they are not gun friendly - however, they do allow more than two. We need to have Arnold the Governator to change the laws in California. Arizona (daughter moved there to go to school to escape Oregon rain) would be ideal, but no ocean. Well, there you have it - the best the US can offer is still a compromise to Greece and the Greek sea. I would say they you are pretty lucky to be where you are. A lot of us on this side of the pond would love to be where you are.
