I've been assembling a 1911 from parts hanging too long. I staked the plunger tube (unknown source), staked grip screw escrushions(sp?), installed mag catch. tried a mag and the slide stop seemed to go to the correct position to stop the slide. Added the slide and the mag pushed the slide stop up and caught the slide. Put the plunger tube spring in (with the pins), and slide stop will not stop the slide. The only thing different I did was to install the spring.
On closer exam, I found that the plunger tube was too long and extending in the area for the slide stop by two RCH (Red Hair). With the limited clearance and pressure of the spring, the slide stop would not go up to the slide stop position.
Removed plunger tube and installed one of the correct length, everything works great.
