View Full Version : Dillon Dies Scratching Brass

Anyone ever have their Dillon carbide sizer dies scratch their brass? My scratches aren't terribly deep but I've never had this happen with RCBS carbide sizers. All brands of brass do the same thing. All lubed liberally with Hornady 1-shot. Sizing is pretty much effortless with the lube but scratches are still present after sizing. Worth calling dillon on it?

Check to see if Carbide insert is cracked or damaged. I would definetly call Dillon!!!!!!!!!!

How many nickle plated cases have you run through the die? The nickle plating has a tendency to flake off ans scratch your brass.
Definately call dillon, but I'd pull the die apart and clean it.

What is the caliber of the dies in question? Can you post a picture of the brass?

Woodman,
I avoid nickle plated like the plague for that very reason. Never run a single one through these dies.
Brass is 45ACP. Dies have only been used to load about 3k rounds to date so they're pretty new. I have pulled them apart and cleaned them with no improvment. I don't have any pics to post right now but will get some later.

Call Dillon and tell them what’s going on, they have the no “BS” warranty
They’ll probably offer to ship you a new set of dies before you ask for them.
I have never been let down by this company
Good Luck

It is possible to imbed grit in the die by using brass that has not been properly cleaned. This will scratch the brass; it has happened to me on several occasions, I just ignore it. The only solution is most likely a new die and I don't think the MFG will spring for it.

Hi trod,
am i missing something here? Are you lubricating your cases for a carbide sizing die? The very idea of a carbide sizer is to omit the lubing. Did you try w/o the lube? Are you cleaning your cases properly? Your reaction is sound, BTW, the die should not scratch the case. That is unacceptable. Besides, I have 500 cases of .38 spl nickeled that I've been reloading for 15 years without any damage to the sizing die, and Lee at that. Now I've tumbled them so many times that the original brass starts to show on many cases.
Good luck and sail safe

Lafeswede,
Lubing with carbide sizer dies is not required but it makes the sizing operation almost effortless! Really speads up the loading process on my 650.

Hi Trod,
Never considered that. Gotta try it right away. My Starline .45 LC cases really is like a workout for sizing. ( Which I probably need at my age anyhow).
Good luck

You will be amazed at the difference a little light spray of Hornadys makes. What I do is take a old plastic shoe box and put about 75 shells in it. Give them a light spray of lube, and roll them back and forth a few times. Hornadys will not affect your powder at all. Makes the whole job go a lot easier. One can will last a long time.
