+p stands for police loads. Now a days most call it performance loads. IMHO using +p load in your 45 is not needed on a full time bases. For protection or carry if you chose, but not a steady diet.

It is loaded to a higher pressure, thus higher velocity. Not especially great for alloy framed guns, but I know police that qualify with it and use it for carry in Lightweight Commanders and other alloy frame guns. Probably easier to shoot out of steel frame guns due the weight of the gun helping hold down on recoiland like stated above, not recommended/needed for a steady diet.
Cost also plays a factor with +P--you're paying quite a bit more.

+P stands for "Plus Pressure"
The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufactures Institute (SAAMI) sets the uniform standards for commercially produced ammunition.
The standard operating pressure or what is referred to, as Maximum Average Pressure (MAP) for the .45ACP is 21,000 P.S.I. the rating for the “+P” ammunition is 23,000 P.S.I.
“Generally” if you have a well made steel gun of modern construction +P ammunition is not a concern, many folks try to limit +P usage to avoid undue wear and tear on there guns
You may come across “+P+” head stamps; this is specially loaded ammunition usually marketed for law enforcement only
