Hi
The VV book gives 869 fps as a max load on a 200 grain bullet. They show 797 fps as max load on a 230 grain. Both are with N320 powder.
Hormaday shows a 900 fps lead (not fmj) load max load of 5.4 grains of N320 for 200 grain bullets.
I think you may have trouble hitting the 850 to 950 range with N320 on the 230's. You can get barely get there on the 200's with max loads.
Hornaday shows a 1.230 OAL for the 200 grain. They show the same OAL for the 230 grain.

Hi
N340 is a *much* better bet for what you are trying to do.
VV manual shows 200 grain starting as 6.3 grains / 922 fps
They show 6.9 grains and 1002 as the max load in 200 grain.
Same manual shows 6.0 grains and 846 fps as starting. Max load is 6.5 grains and 928 fps.
In 200 grain Hornaday shows 6.8 grain for 850 fps, 7.1 for 900 and 7.4 (max) for 950 fps
In 230 grain Hornaday shows 6.4 grains for 850 and 6.7 grain (max) for 900 fps.
This is all straight out of the current manuals. I have no direct experience with any of these loads. I can say that other than something odd like N350 I don't see anything obviously better from VV for the loads.

Bob, Once again THANK YOU. I will use N320 for Hornady 200gr and 230gr RN/FMJ and the N340 for Hornady 200gr and 230gr JHP/XTP. I certainly will be busy for awhile!!

Hi
I typed a little fast on that first post. The proper data for N320 on 200's from the VV manual
start 5.0 grain / 869 fps
max 5.5 grain / 942 fps
Hope that makes a little more sense.

WW 231 is an excellent powder for the .45 and much cheaper than VV. Why waste money?

Hi
One claimed advantage of N320 is that it burns cleaner. I have no data to back that up.

'Not at all' being a wise acre here, I know the man wants to use the VV powder.
Just agreement, that the 231, (for me), burns 'really clean.' I load 5.6/5.8grs
with a remington 230gr. fmj, in a winchester case, COL, is 1.260 on the button. In my 1911's i get "excellent accuracy", even out at extremely long range, here in the canyons, messin around, and on paper, the accuracy is very tight, @25yds, with the Kimber Pro Carry II, and the recoil is very calm, PLUS, i can blast away with 'several hundred rds', come in the house, and wipe the gun off, and do it again later..... it is clean! No Joke.
This is the main reason i never went to the VV powder in question, plus the cost.... "Just a suggestion", but it is really not a lot different than the 231.
Even in the new SA GI model i just bought, these rds, with the 231, allow me to shoot a good deal, come in, dust off the outside, and put it up for the next session, it really has run that clean, (for me).
I know i sound like i am trying to change your mind...This "is not" even my motive or intension, just a 'suggestion', that there is something much cheaper, and burns pretty much as clean.. ;)
Good luck Hoss!

Thanks Guys, Any and all information will be put in THE FILE for later. I'ts just that I'm really stocked up on the stuff I want to use for those loads. Anything that's close too or matches the Hornady 200gr. or 230gr. JHP/XTP Factory loadings which I carry. I just want these for practice, as I will be going to Hornady TAP for carry.

Hi
If you can beg / borrow / steal a chrono it can be very useful in doing what you are trying to do. With chrono data you can do a pretty fast experiment to match up your practice load to the carry load.

Pa_Guns, gave you this info:
In 200 grain Hornaday shows 6.8 grain for 850 fps, 7.1 for 900 and 7.4 (max) for 950 fps
In 230 grain Hornaday shows 6.4 grains for 850 and 6.7 grain (max) for 900 fps.
As noted, he got that from the Hornady manual.. I have it in front of me as well.
This got me to lookin here..... that the VV N-340, allows a guy to get 900fps with a 230 XTP, with 6.7grs. The 231 powder, won't let me get past 800fps Max, according to the same Hornady manual Vol # 1 Sixth Edition
HUUUMMMM, although i am bragging on the 231 here, (and it is very good, no doubt), i may have to 'bite the bullet', and get some VV N-340 myself, and raise the velosity up on this thing a tad. ;)
Man, you cost me money by starting this thread! :D
Good luck to ya.
Stay safe, and have fun.

Hi
231 is a lot closer to N320 than it is to N340 or N350. The slower burning rate on the N340 gets you a bit more velocity with big bullets. N350 is a 44 mag powder ...

Now Pa, man don't get me started on the 44mag/45LC loads....
Those big bores, are strickly reserved for 2400, and Unique. (an occasional H110 for the 44mag). 35 years of 'old school', reloading these two calibers. I think my Rugers would 'drop their grip panels', if i ever put any other powder in those big bores! :D Many have tried to change me on this one, ( i realize you are not BTW), and i just can't do it. Tons of lead fired over the years with Keith , and LBT Cast bullets. Started studying ole Elmer, when i was a pup. ;)
Your right on those load comparisons, and rates. I am going to have to try the N-340 on the 45acp though.

Hi
A "full load" of 2400 in a 357 max is an awesome thing at night. I used to clear the indoor range when I shot full loads. The flash had people worried ....
I'm not out to replace 2400 with N350, just trying to give you an idea of how much faster / slower you get as you move up from N320 to N350.

You could'nt get me to replace the 2400 in those Rugers, if you held that 357 on me! :nono: :D
Naw, i hear ya on the powder, i got the rate chart on my bench. ;)
I bet that 357 load at the indoor range, did cause discomfort for the one next to ya! I have seen some pretty cool fire balls out of the Glock 20 10mm with some of my nitro loads ;)
