Would appreciate any suggestions for a "do it yourself" replacement sight/sights for a Rock Island 1911 Gov't. Mine shoots low. I drifted the rear sight over to where it hits dead on horizontally, but it is about 6" low vertically.

The point of impact can be raised by raising the rear sight in adjustable sight systems or by removing some metal from the front sight to reduce its height in fixed sight systems (same effect as raising the rear sight). This must be done at the range (I have a small vise that I bring along) VERY gradually as it is a pain to install a new front sight if you go too far. Make sure that you have decided upon a load to be used on a regular basis, and use that load to sight in. If you don't have the patience or skill to remove a few thousandths at a time from the front sight, take it to a gunsmith. The job is best done with fine files that remove only a small amount of metal.

Thanks, I was actually looking for a replacement rear sight of lower height, hoping to keep as best a sight picture as possible for OLD EYES. If I do not find one, I will have to go the file route.

Keep the file flat and go smoothly. You can easily take off too much, but it's hard to put it back on.

Well put! A lesson I learned long ago on black powder revolvers.
