Did the military issue any of the Colt Super .38 as official side arms? Are there Super .38's with the US Property stamp?

The U.S. Ordnance department bought a small lot of 400 +/- ,of Colt .38 Super pistols during WWII. They were stamped with the ordnance acceptance stamp ("Crossed Cannons") as well as the initials of Col. Guy H. Drewry ( G.H.D. ) Inspector of Ordnance. They are a highly collectible variation of the U.S.G.I. pistols. There is a book "Colts Super 38" by Douglas Sheldon, that covers them. Send me a PM and I can send you some photos of one. :)

They were some still in use as late as 1969, at the SAMSO Command Post in L.A.-that is what we were issued--guess the USAF could not afford new ones.

Sheldon's book is terrific. As mentioned above, 400 shipped to the government in 1945, of which 24 went to Remington. It seems after a clerical error Remington was on the way to making 32 MILLION rounds of 38 super ammo, which got cut off at 2 million. 20 wound up at the Pentagon and some of the others supposedly went to the OSS.
The one pictured in Sheldon's book will make you cry, it's Brand new with extra mags in the wrap.
I've seen a fake one with engraved ordnance wheel and g.h.d., not stamped.
That's why you need a Colt letter.
