Hi, I have a 1911 Colt frame made in 1918 and would like to know if there is any restrictions to sell it. Ebay does not permit anyone to sell a frame or receiver. Does anyone know if you have to sell it through a firearm dealer, because it has a serial number. Appreciate any help.
thanks

Yes the frame will need to be transferred through a FFL. The serial numbered frame is considered a firearm as far as transfer is concerned.

I am not certain, but I don't think the BATFE requires an FFL if a handgun (or frame) is transferred face-to-face within the same state. However, not all states allow face-to-face sales without an FFL being involved, so you really need to research the laws for your state.

Out of state, it definitely must go through an FFL.

You can sell FTF in NC without a dealer, however, the buyer must give a permit to the seller which allows the seller to be released from a liability for selling a firearm. However, I would still go through a FFL to have formal documentation for the serial number to be released from your name in case of later problems.

I would agree with this procedure. I have bought handguns from individuals and sold handguns to individuals in PA who are PA residents. Since PA is a "right to carry" state private handgun sales are not prohibited, however, for your own safety and piece of mind it is best to sell through a dealer.

Joe,

If you are considering selling.... contact a regular member 'Mark Hitchcock'... as I believe he is looking for a 1918-19 Colt frame. Check the 'Want to Buy' section of this Fourm.
