I just bought a used gold cup and checked the recoil spring. I am going to put a 16.5 Lbs. variable power recoil spring in it, Wolff brand. I found something that I have never seen before. A plastic recoil spring guide. I didn't know that they made such things. Have anyone saw this before? This pistol has been well takening care of. Could someone tell me how long they have been making plastic guides? Thank You

What sort of Gold Cup is it? Series 70, Series 80 Gold Cup National Match or Series 80 Gold Cup Trophy or is it another caliber than .45 ACP? For a .45 ACP Colt Gold Cup and standard pressure loads I would use a 16 pound recoil spring and target semi wad cutter ammunition I would use the 12 pound recoil spring. Keep in mind the target loads are much lighter loads than standard and the target loads will not cycle a 16 pound recoil spring reliable and will throw recoil off. Most my GCNM has a steel recoil guide. Oddly enough the only one that does not is my DGCNM 10mm with 2 recoil springs from Colt. I leave it stock only because of the value of the pistol and do not shoot it often though I have shot it enough to know she works very well.

Well that is a aftermarket barrel (as I am sure you know) so that very well could be an aftermarket plastic guide rod. My Series 80 GCNM has a steel guide rod but it is a 1991. I would get a steel guide rod just to be on the safe side along with a 16 pound recoil spring you should be good to go. Just be sure to hang onto the plastic guide rod in case it were factory. I would think it to be steel from the factory but I am not positive. A call to Colt with the serial number can get you more info. 1 800 962 Colt. I sure do love them Gold Cups.

If it were me I would run a 16 pound conventional recoil spring for 230 ball. Are you planning on shooting and 185 LSCW or SWC target loads through your Gold Cup? If you do and use a 12 pound recoil spring (for true reduced power target loads) you will be surprised how sweet that Gold Cup shoots. That Colt goes from a fire breathing monster to a purring kitten. :D
