Hey, guys!

I've found an early design Colt 1911 for sale and I had a few questions. I have the serial number off the frame, but I left it in my car. Where else should I check for identifying numbers? I'm no expert, but it seems legit to me. All the features match those of a WWI era pistol. The slide is stamped as a US issue. The only thing is, this pistol has been nickel plated and is certainly well used. For the price, the authenticity of the finish is not an issue for me. Assuming the weapon itself is authentic, how much would something like this be worth since it has been nickel plated? Thanks for your help.

Try calling Colt Customer Service at 1-800-962-COLT(2658), with the SN. Also, http://proofhouse.com/index.htm is an excellent source. Good luck!

GI pistols were never nickel plated, so obviously any value it had as a collector's pistol has been tossed out the window. Basically, it's worth what any very old, well used, shooter grade pistol is worth. In essence, it doesn't really have much intrinsic value ... it's worth however much you are willing to pay for it.

Don't be persuaded by the 1911 (not A1) configuration and the US Property markings. With the original finish gone, the pistol can never again be authentic. Even if you had it stripped and professionally restored, it probably wouldn't be worth what the restoration would cost you.

First, thanks ofr the advise. If it had not been plated and other finish abuse, what would be the going price for a well used 1918 vintage 1911?

Again, thanks in advance for your response.
