Well, I'm starting to whittle this down, a lot. It has been stated to make sure I get a good bushing to help increase accuracy. Okay, and "maybe" a barrel. Question I have is, after I have the nickel stripped will the slide fit so loosley on the frame that it can affect the accuracy. I've read that what determines the accuracy is the bushing and lockup of the barrel in the slide. I'm sure all components play their own specific role in the accuracy but I don't wish to spend money on a slide unless really needed. Also, could you recommend a good book to purchase on customizing of 1911's. Maybe one on finishing as well, starting to develope more questions and I hate to wear my welcome out here with what might be deemed as stupid questions. I can see where this project is going to demand another one right behind it (addicting). Thanks in advance for the information and help.

It is my opinion that anyone owning a 1911 owes it to himself/herself to obtain Jerry Kuhnhausen's two books "THE COLT .45 AUTOMATIC" and "THE U.S. M1911/M1911A1 PISTOLS" from Heritage Publishers. Buy'em both and you don't get charged for S&H - what a deal. I have nearly a dozen or so books on the 1911 but none compare to these two. Start reading in the evening and lose a night's sleep because you won't be able to put one of these down.

I doubt you could wear out your welcome here especially with questions but I know what you mean by wanting a good reference book. My favorite it the two Kuhnhausen shop manuals titled The Colt .45 Automatic. Slide to frame fit affects accuracy but not nearly as much as barrel to bushing to slide fit and barrel fit (consistent vertical lock up and repeatable mechanical accuracy taken directly from the Kuhnhausen manual) The slide can also be tightened up a bit as an alternative to a new slide.

Sorry OJ I did not mean to post similar as you I reckon you are a little quicker with the keyboard. Nice Colt (as I have said a few times in the past). Semper Fi.

Two identical answers at the same time by two respected members, well, when I find them I'll buy them...

They are worth the cost i refer to them often and am getting ready to reread them as I'm thinking of building a 1911 from frame/slide up

My friend Hunter - no problem - judging by the times listed, we were providing our answers at the same time and I just happened to start a couple of minutes before you. We are certainly in agreement.

For me, one of the many beauties of this organization is the oportunity to get and provide advice and information when needed and thus encourage new members (Sorta like "AA" in reverse - "Hello, my name is OJ and I'm a 1911 shooter") ;)

OK - thanks for the kind words - here's the link to the site where you can find them.

There's an old definition of ignorance that goes something like - "When the other guy doesn't know something you just now learned" :)

Geez, not only was that unanimous, but quick. I now have volume 1 and 2 on the way to the house. Thanks for the info on this, I hate stumbling through the dark. Nice looking Colt OJ, what wood are the grips from?

Bullfighter,

Glad my info was helpful for you - The wood on my 1911A1 is walnut and that's what it came from the factory with. :)

Best,
