Question on the original 1911....

The early contracts, the very first 1911's made up until the switch to the A1, what was done with them? You see some taken home from both world wars, ones that were issued to various services.......For some reason I thought I had heard somewhere that they modified the 1911's to A1's after the A1 was adopted, but from what I keep seeing, this doesn't seem true. Their seem to be a lot of original 1911's.....Did they keep issueing them? Or did the military reire them?

The Model 1911's remained in service, were rebuilt as needed, and I am sure that some were still in weapons inventory when the switch to the M9 was made. No effort was made to upgrade them to 1911A1 configuration, but 1911A1 parts were used as needed during rebuild.
