Does anyone know of a catalog or listing of Colt models? I have a Ser 70 GCNM, a Ser 80 GCNM, a Ser 80 Govt and recently a Ser 80 Combat Government. I can look and see the difference between those four. But I see Elites, XSE's and twenty-five other names for models and the Colt web site isn't much help on explaining the difference.

Communication with the boss suggests that I expand the question. What I am looking for is a table (spreadsheet?) of Colt models. It needs for each model (IMO): caliber, barrel length, finish (as in Blued or SS, frame and slide, if different), sights (fixed or adjustable and if adjustable, what kind), grips and the right and left roll marks. I started one, but it's kind of short, since I only have four pistols. I'm willing to work on it, but I don't really know where to start. Ideas?

I'm not aware of anything like that for those new of models. There are several books out with that info. on pre-70 guns on back, but nothing newer.

May have to contact Colt directly.

Good luck on a spread-sheet. If Colt does not help you then you can (slowly) develope the information by reading this and other forums and surfing the Inet. I am still constantly learning. Until recently, when I bumped into one in a pawn shop in Arizona, I was ignorant of the "Night" models. What I saw was a Night Officers model (Overpriced at $999 by the way). Apparently Colt had a deal with a maker of glow in the dark night sights and came out with a number of "Night" models.

I do not know of any one book with every Colt 1911 but if you get The Standard Catalog of Firearms, a few of the Gun Digest books of gun values, Pistols of the World, and the Gun Traders Guide that will cover most everything Colt has put out. I keep copies of all those listed and when a magazine such as Guns and Ammo does a special 1911 edition add that you will have pretty good references to the 1911s Colt has made not to mention thousands of other firearms. A long with the internet you should be able to find out most anything you want to know. Those books can add up to be pretty expensive but if you can stand the hassel of The Military Book Club you can get them a whole lot cheaper that say through retail or a gunshow.

Go to this link.

http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/downloads.asp

It has downloadable spec sheets for every current model of Colt firearm. You should be able to get what you want from that. You will also find hi-res photos and a link to instruction manuals for the various firearms.

There were a lot of uncataloged models produced. Just the number of Gold Cup variations is amazing.

I was thinking the same thing. Haven't they done a bunch of special runs for Lew Horton?

Did someone say Gold Cup? :D Yes there were right many models not cataloged but many of those can still be found in reference books if you spend the time looking. Who would do such a thing though?

"Who would do such a thing though?" Probably me, in some previous existence I was a Sumerian file clerk who made all the clay tablets they dig up in the Middle East. I'll take Garrettwc's starter and add my own and then start adding the ones that show up on the site here. I don't know what I'll do with it, but I'll make available to the members here anyway.

Myself included as well I was just being sarcastic to myself. My leisure reading is of old and new gun books. I spend right much of my time staring at pages of all kinds of Colt I hope to own.
