View Full Version : Part Quality?

I am not trying to start a range war, but in my upcoming project gun, I am trying to decided on who's parts to use. I have had great experience with Wilson, but I am thinking of using Ed Brown Internals in this gun, What does everyone think of Ed Brown over Wilson? Is the quality on par with Wilson?

Thanks for your input.

I'd say their quality is on par with each other. I've broken both Hardcore and Bulletproof parts. :)

EGW is a forum sponsor and has quality parts - check them out, as well as some of the other forum sponsors for the parts you need. Both Ed Brown and Wilson use cast parts that are then hardened, slide stops for example which take a pounding. Like Kruzr said, he's broken both brands' best parts. OEM Colt parts are another choice. I slightly bent a Colt slide stop, but did not break it (see my post in "why it's not a good idea to drop the slide without a loaded magazine" in the sticky section).

Good Luck!

You know I didn't think about Colt's parts since it was a Custom, I have had good luck with Wilson Combat, and of course colts, I would be interested in more info on EGW's reputation.

EGW parts are tough as nails and very good. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

On the other hand, not all Brown and Wilson parts are cast. And the fact that a part is cast, does not make it of inferior quality, if heat treated properly.

And while we're at it, I've also seen two broken Colt thumb safeties on the same gun within 2 months of each other.

Unless you radiograph each and every part, there is no way of knowing if porosity or voids exist. After that, you have no way of knowing if the heat treatment was done right. And lastly, unless you review the mill certs, you don't know if the steel is per spec on a forged part even. Things happen and stuff breaks. When something breaks on my guns, I first take a good look to make sure it wasn't something else that caused that problem. If not, I get a new part and move on.

Heck, about the only parts I've never broken are the MIM parts in my Kimbers..............go figure.

I like both Wilson and Ed Brown. Replaced the fire control parts in my Pro Carry II with Ed Brown parts and they are excellent!!!
