advice requested for info on finishing

I would like to do some finish "enhancements" on my stainless pistol. May be doing some material removal, blending, and polishing. Where can I get information on what to buy and how to use it? There are so many options that I expect it would be easy to use the wrong product(s).

Looking for books, sites, or just direct information from you awesome people. I'd also like to not spend a lot of money right away, I just need the basics, thanks.
