EDIT: Disregard this post. Tuner's a 1911 mastermind and I'm merely a humble, ignorant disciple of JMB. My heart's in the right place, but my brain's comparatively empty.

Series 80's are post-1983 Colts that have the wonderful new firing pin block. That means all sorts of fun littles changes in the frame, slide, firing pin, firing pin, hammer, and maybe some other odds and ends. This fun little gizmo is hooked up to the trigger and makes it so that the new block goes up when you pull the trigger so that the firing pin can work and the gun can go bang. Some like the extra reassurance, others figure it's unecessary (and hence one more little doohickey to malfunction). Of course, Colt started remaking some Series 70's, so don't only go by production date.

Being a novice, I would suggest that you spend some time in our Home Page (the link is somewhere near the top, under "The M-1911 Pistols Organization" menu). It's time well spend, and it will answer a lot of your questions.

And let's not confuse "Series 70" with having anything to do with firing pin blocks. "Series 70" announced the arrival of the collet barrel bushing in the Government Model and Gold Cup (that's why there are no Series 70 Commanders, because the Commander never had a collet bushing).
