I'm waiting for my new colt commander XSE . I bought some CMC mags to try out on it if they don't work i've got a few wilsons on the way. I got a drop in high ride beaver tail from wilsons and was thinking of putting a drop in mag well on it. Any suggestions for a mag well and if possible some pics. Oh and how hard is it to fit the grip safety? Thanks in advance.

Good choice on pistols and welcome to the forum. It should not be too hard to fit up the bevertail. Pay attention to where material needs to be relieved (if any) and go slow. Also be sure to do a function check to make sure the beavertail leg is blocking the trigger bow when it is not depressed and the trigger bow will clear the leg when it is depressed. Minor fitting may also be required there as well. I try and cut a little and recheck. It takes longer that way but I am no gunsmith so that keeps me from having to buy more parts. I try and leave my Colts stock but you need to make the Commander your own. I am not a big fan of magwells. Many of them extend far enough past the grip that when you insert the magazine if you do not be sure to seat the magazine it may not lock in. If it really counted and you were in a hurry and you did not seat the magazine totally dropping the slide on an empty chamber could be bad (and I don't mean just on the pistol). My thoughts anyway.

I'm a fan of the Smith and Alexander MSH/Magwell combos. Here what it looks like uninstalled:

And here are a couple pics of it installed on my pistol:

The make both "slim" and "normal" versions. The "slim" versions are designed to match the contour of slimline grips. I actually bought one of those and some slimline grips, also, but went back to the regular versions because they fit my hands better.

There are plenty of other options for magwells, this is just my personal preference.

And as Hunter said it might be a bit of a problem to ensure that the magazines go all the way up as the magwell can get in the way. That's why I put the bumpers on my mags. Congratulations on your new purchase and good luck equiping it like you want.

andrew10736,
I too own a LW XSE Commander, and it's a DANDY! Like Hunter, I tend to leave my Colts stock, but as he so wisely said, it's your gun and you are free to change it to suit you and your needs.

One thing, though.........Be sure to post some "before and after" pictures when you get it! :)

Hate to :dead_hors ...and it will be YOUR COLT but why change anything before you shoot it. Put a few hundred rounds down the pipe and then make your decision on any add-ons. I think you will find that Colts are pretty darn nice just the way they are when they left the factory. :)

Motec thanks for the pics I was probably going to go with the S&A but those pics sold me on it. The mags I ordered for McCormick all have bumper pads so I don't think seating them should be a problem . :)
