this just followed me home today. Its an Ithaca 1911A1, made about 1944/45 according to the info.

it was just sitting there all alone. it will be intersting to see how well it shoots.

Old soldiers like this should not be left alone! Glad to see he now has a proper home. Thanks for sharing!

From the picture it's hard to tell, but are there some stamps (perhaps rebuild stamps) under the serial number?

exitwounds,

from my search on the www, it appears this pistol is almost complete. the mainspring housing donsnt have the 7 grooves and the hammer doesnt have the serrations. The hammer has a light diamondshaped knurling. info one the www said that they changed to a "serrated" hammer in 44/45, but dont say what they used up to that date. i havent seen any info on "rebuild" stamp markings. The barrel is as it should be with the HR and P, the frame has the FJA, P , #2 inspectors, and double arrow factory proof, flaming bomb, and appropriate USP, M1911A1 USARMY. The slide has the P on top. Grips are of the cross mold type too.

im not too concerned about if its a rebuild since i didnt think i would find one as in good shape and for a good price. I figured that if it has some parts replaced, there was a reason why since the rest of the gun appears to be all the same in finish and use.

The proofs would be a P on the top of the slide just in front of the rear sight, and a P in the area of the magazine release button on the left side. The acceptance marks would be the FJA on the left side of the frame just under the slide stop, and the "Crossed Cannons on the right side of the frame near the very back. If the initials under the serial number are RIA, FK , and a flaming bomb it indicates a trip back through Rock Island Arsenal.

Can you provide any close up photos of the area around the serial number?

guess that would explain the changes.

johnny peppers,

There is some type of circular mark on on the right side near the grip, but iits really shallow. couldnt get a good pic, yet alone one that would show up.

For better pix turn off the flash in the camera and use a lamp (or two) to provide more even lighting.

The RIA stamp is that of Rock Island Arsenal. Looks good.
