So, theres no confusion, the question is Colt specific.

Any Colt is a good second Colt really (I like your specification "the question is Colt specific" :D I would think about a Gold Cup (imagine that) they are great range guns, suitable if you decide to get into competitive shooting, continue to appreciate in value, and mostly because they are Gold Cups. I also like the Combat Elite for the same reasons. Then again if you could find an old 1911 Government Model that would be an excellent investment. The Combat Commanders are nice to have (I am huntin one now). Maybe your question should be what is a good second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth Colt :D. I think the Gold Cups would be a good starting place for one you plan to shoot regular. I doubt there is a wrong answer to your question unless someone says "get a Kimber"

As I don't know what the "first Colt" is, I'll take a chance and say either the WWI re-issue or the S70 re-issue for the "second Colt :D

Hummm-
You mean your second or our personal choice for a second
If the latter my first is a early (pre 70 series) Commander- If i could afford my second would be a Gold Cup for certain ;)

I agree with wetidlerjr...either one would be a great addition to a beginning collection. I'm assuming the "first Colt" is either a carry gun or a good range gun. If the "first Colt" is more collectible, then I'd have to agree with Hunter. Any way you go, you'll have a winner!

Looks like your first Colt was/is a Series 80 SS Government? I put a vote in for an Officers Model. I have an OM manufactured in 1985 that I got in pristine condition for an excellent price and I love it. It's pretty much become my carry weapon, at least for the summer, because I can fit it into my leather coat's inside pocket when I'm riding my motorcycle, and because it's been reliable as in 1 FTRB when I first shot it but none since ( must be around 400 rds now). It also carries well in my fullsized IWB. You have to look around a bit to find an OM, I found mine on Gunbroker.com and have seen several others since then for similar prices.

Here is my $.02

Idea one - match the size / style to your intended use..

Idea two - Find something unique that interests you...

Idea three - look for a great deal that the Colt Fairy throws at you!

There's a Colt Fairy??.... I'd have guessed more like a Colt godfather!

I can't fault Jeff's logic on the Officers Model, even though I do not currently own one. As for me, my first was the XSE Lightweight Commander in nickel/stainless. The second was a blue Series 70 re-issue, and the third was a stainless Series 70 re-issue.

I'm shopping for an all steel Commander at present, but if an Officers Model should happen to catch my eye, then so be it.

Well, my opinion is worth exactly what you have paid for it. ;)

You have a Series 80, I would get a Series 70 or a pre-Series 70.

WWII repro
WWI repro
Series 70 reissue
a Gunsite

or an original.

Some big help huh? ;)

Yup, I got a deal on that Gov 80 SS.
And am really giving thought to my second one. No need for carry, keep a boomsnake in the glovebox, shooting competitively, probably not again, had my full of it. Fun, but took too many weekends.
I'm thinking maybe, if I could scrounge a deal, a WWI circa one. But some serious study will be needed. as they say "I've done been had" buying collecibles in the past.

God, I hope I can keep it around 600.
I mean, I got this one for a couple of hundred, so I can imagine what that kind of scratch could get :D

whars that sumritch Hunter? Didnt he sell his car and go to a show this weekend :lh:

I got my OM for under that, but you'll have to wheel and deal to get most Colts for under that figure. It can be done, but you'll probably have to have more patience than I have!

Naw I am still here. My truck hits the paper Wednesday and the gunshow is only a few weeks away. I have been at gunbroker most of the day getting ideas for my next pistol. I think I will try a Colt this time and see where that goes. :D There are so many more Colts I want it is hard to know where to go next. I have narrowed it down to a few dozen "must haves" and then I will go from there. I hope nothing happens to the plumbing industry in the near future :scared:

You know variety is the spice of life. That is why I try and get all my Colts with different serial numbers, for the variety. :D

In this line of work you need a sense of humor or a drinking problem or both :D

Drinking problem? I don't need no steenkin' drinkin' problem....just ask my pal Johnnie Walker...he's right here beside me now......hummm, he must be embarrassed that I brought up his name, he's kinda ...red

When you are only on your second, the question is not so important. Any one you get will only be a short stop to the next (unless you live with John in Greece, an even then you will have a closet full of airsoft pistols).
Once you've gotten yourself about 7-8, and the itch is temporarily in submission, that is the time to make a careful consideration of the next one--while you fiances re-stabilize.
However, if you do not have a 70 Series repo, I would highly recommend it. They only drawback is, the doggone thing is so beautiful you will almost hate to shoot it.
I have not yet gotten the WWI repro; however, I sin mightily with coveting everyone I see.
No combat commanders? Gotta have at least one (that is one blued, one SS, one satin nickel).
Ask Hunter if maybe a Gold Cup would be worth having.
There are a lot of 1918 original USGI 1911's floating around and can be usually had for a decent price (although the decent priced ones are not completely correct). This (at least for me) gives me some feeling of a connection to the past and the sacrifices that others made for me--something I try to never forget.
I let a Rem Rand 1991A1 get past be that I wish I had not.
So many choices, and none of them wrong.

In the end, I offer this advice that has served me well in buying my next Colt:

You will know it, when you see it!

Yeah, I've narrowed it down to just a few

Unless someone figures out how to make water run uphill, or they plug the factory we all came with, its unlikely!!

My first Colt was a Huntsman. My first 1911 was a series 80 Officer's Model in SS. My second 1911, a series 70, blued, Gold Cup. However, after the Huntsman, the second Colt that I acquired was a first generation AR-15. Like an idiot, I traded it for a S&W Model 28 6" with 1,000 rounds of ammo.
