Whew, I am loving typing in 1911 on Ebay

Man it seems a shame to do such a thing to a Colt slide and what about those grip panels. I think I will pass.

I'm guessing arturo rojas castelan (the engraver) has never actually seen a buffalo (with apologies to buffalo, if that thing on top is something else)

I have to agree with Hunter. Sometimes I think people do that to a Colt just to irritate the purists.

And they succeed! (Hmmm ... Gotta talk to the boss. Where's that :barf: icon when you really need it?)

It's pretty over-the-top, too blingy, and with the wrong theme for a 1911, but I'd take it. Not for that price, of course, but if I found it in a garage sale for $4.99 I'd take it. Needless to say, I'd sell it ASAP.

Now this on is better. Excessive isn't always tasteless.
And (on an 80, in my mind) beg for a bit of enhancement. I dont think I could do it to a 70, and certainly not one made before the 60's.

That is not bad but I am not really into engraving so much on firearms. A little done in good taste is O.K. sometimes but on the whole I like my 1911s to have Colt and the Rampant Pony on the and that is about it.

I dont want to scroll mine, but I'm giving serious thought to putting some grip "lines" on the frame in front of the magazine- middle one is about 3" long, a total of 5 lines, tapering down.
Saw some pics here, but hell if I can find them now. Clean enhancement.
The only place I really like serious engraving is on shotguns.

Eh. 1911's look pretty enough with a pony and some guaranteed reliability. However, some of the black ones with the scrollwork engraving look amazing if done well. Needless to say, splattering gold and crazy designs on what would otherwise be a clean Colt surface is amazing as well, only not in a good way.

CWG,
I agree entirely- the Colt you illustrate is far more tasteful than the slide from (ecccch!!) Ebay. There is a world of difference between embellished and overkilled.

And to further insult the situation.....must we use the word "blin*y"?? Why stoop to even lower levels?

Actually I'm not that surprised at it, I've seen a few 1911's like this. Granted I'm in the Chicagoland area, and that's where this sellar is from. I have noticed though that it is typically Argentenian(sp?) Colts that have the inlays and major work like this. I have also noticed that these and most of the "Ultimate" and bright nickel Colts are being sold to people of Hispanic desent, and immigrants.

Huh? Really! Ok. I'll take you for your word on that statement but what does that have to do with this?

The slide was made by a Hispanic engraver and the shop is in Chicago/Chicagoland. I was just trying to offer up a little more reasoning behind this style of personalization since not many really understood the draw of it. There is actually a store in my area that carries complete 1911's in this style. They are always Colts, and typically of foreign manufacture, and always by a Hispanic or have a Hispanic name for the gun. I saw one the last time I was there that was the Ultimate finish and had this style of engraving.

Ok. I guess what your saying is that there is a rich historical culture of Latin-American Pistolsmithing that this slide resembles. The intricate carvings and ornate artistry draw direct inferences to that Latin-American style. I get it. I see what you're saying now. For a minute I thought you were saying that Hispanics and immigrants like shiny guns. ;) Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I like the shiny Colts. I just bought a Colt Series 80 Gold Cup National Match in bright stainless. She sure is purty and I am Scottish/German descent. I reckon you can't get no whiter than that but I still like the bright stainless Colts.

I like the shiny stuff too, but I don't like my shiny stuff to have 5 lbs of gold pounded into every nook and crany. That slide is tame to some of the stuff I've seen being sold around here.

The engraver needed to stop long before he did. The grips, nice. The light work around the edges, nice....the plating? c'mon...the letters?? what the hell??!??

I saw a more tastefull one today, it was dark polished blue/matte/black and had gold accents, trigger, hammer, safety, and bushing.
