A good evening to all S & W 1911 folks.
I am new to this forum so I'll keep it brief until I have more to say, I just want to thank you all for this site it has been a great help in making up my mind about a decision I was trying to make and it also caused the dilemma to a point. On Monday I called a local shop and asked them to hold a RIA Mil-spec for me until this Sat. Then i got on this site Monday night and was reading all the info you nice folks give out about the different makes of 1911's and started thinking about the S&W's. I sifted through all of you postings on both guns, and while it seems the RIA is a good gun I have now decided to wait a little bit longer and get enough money togather for a S&W 108282 or 108285, this is now the new dilemma which one should I get? I know you all would say both but I can only afford one since my wife and I are expecting our first child. I am sure you understand my position so HELP me make up my MIND!!! What is left of it.

The RIA is a good choice, and a little cheaper than the S & W. I know what you mean about losing your mind, 1911s will do that to both you and your wallet.
While I have not owned a S & W 1911, I have shot them at the range and handled them at several guns hops. They do, indeed, appear to be excellent weapons. My buddies that own one have no complaints with them at all! However, from the prices I see at the gunshops I vist one can easily spend 900-1000 dollars on one.
I am in Louisville. Where are you?

Thanks To both for your quick reply. I am located in London, KY South of Lexington. I do think I made the right choice of guns, I own a S&W model 29 Revolver and have owned a couple of their 357's in a mod 586 so it is a company I am comfortable with and the Lifetime Warreny is also a factor but now I need to make up my mind on the color.

Ky Nimrod. Down at the gun show here in Florida you can get brand new in the box #108282 1911 S&W. for $700.00. The PD's with Crimson Trace Laser Sites were only $850.00. I know they use to have gun shows in Kentucky as I lived in Lexington for a while. Save your coins up and go to one of them. I have a #108282 and I reload and I have shot everything you can put through a 45 in this one and it is flawless. You will not regret the wait for it.
Good luck with that new baby and welcome on board. :D

Laurel Co huh? I'm a Hoosier by birth, but the family's from Knox and Bell Co. I used to get down that way a couple of times a year, not so much any more. Used to look forward to eating in the Jerry's right there off I75. It was my favorite part of a trip to grandma's (other than seeing her of course)
Welcome to the forum and congrats on the impending birth of your baby and your 1911 fever.

I have been using S&W handguns most of my adult life, both on the job, and in competition. I waited for the bugs to be worked out on the 1911's from S&W and I now own a couple of them. I think both of your selections are good ones. Do you need stainless or are you like me, a little fond of the blue? They are both excellent firearms with excellent backing from the factory. If it was me, I would save up and get what you want. Get the most you can afford. If you must get one now, you can always trade up. You may lose a little money doing this. Whatever you decide, get some professional training and practice, practice and practice some more. You will enjoy your 1911 more and be a much safer for your family.

Welcome to this great forum KY NIMROD. The RIA`s I think are pretty good pistols for the money. I`m thinking of getting one myself. But only because I already have a very nice SW1911. 108284 with a few cosmetic changes. I love it. Little over 500 rnds through it with ZERO failures. Great pistol with a great customer service.

I have been considering this and I think on further reflection I am going to get the Blue model. I think I do need a Stainless rifle for hunting due to it being out in the weather but i think for a pistol that will not be in the weather much and besides it has a deep luster and I like that look.

Hey I almost forgot to tell you all, went to a couple of shops to day to look at S&W's. I looked at one with the lasersite grips but he was asking over 900 for it it also had the short 4.25 bbl and i think I want the longer bbl my mod 29 has the 8 & 3/8s so I like em long I guess and one dealer said he'd not had anyone trade in a Smith I am really getting the S&W fever, is there any cure??? I asked another dealer if he'd gotten any feed back and he said no one had brought one back and he had sold quite a few. I guess I am fond of S&W's but I think that's OK isn't it?

Kynimrod you were looking at a PD model more than likely. They got them at the gun shows for $850.00. I am going to try the 41/4" barrel myself. If everything goes right I am going to use it for cc. I have the Laser site on my SP101 and it sure has help me with my failing eye sight. You have to practice a lot with them but if you do they work out real good. :D

KY Nimrod, The S&W fever is only topped by the Colt fever. No known cure. My first handgun was a S&W Model 10. I still think that the best revolvers in the world are the Model 29 and the Model 19. I will admit I love the Colt Python and the old single action Colts. My love for the 1911's started in the military. My everyday carry at work is a Colt 1911. The first Smith 1911 I bought less than a year ago and I carry it on my off days. It's a 1911SC and from the first round through break-in and my weekly range days are trouble free. Not a single malfunction. I have Kimbers and I'll admit that the TLE II I own is an excellent weapon. I have added another S&W 1911 to my collection and it is just like the first one, excellent. My first love will always be revolvers, that is what I started shooting and I will always own them. The 1911 is still my favorite semi-auto and it's the gun that I put on my side every day. When I'm in the woods, it's a S&W 4" model 29. I am a student of history, and the more I study history, the more I love those great guns from Colt and S&W.

1911 shooter: You sound as if you are a LE officer. Are you? Yes, my first revolvers were a Smith model #10. Then I got a few dollars ahead and got a model #19 .357 with the prettiest wood grips you ever saw. Paid a whopping $95 for it, too. Then, when you really wanted to be something in my agency, you got a Smith model #66 for duty and a Chief's Special model #60 for off-duty.
I am looking at a new Smith 1911. They sure do look purdy. From what the forum members are saying, accuracy and reliability are both outstanding. They look good in the shops I visit. I am getting the Smith urge pretty strongly.

GarrettWC: Isn't that the truth. I have been in LE for 34 years. S & W were THE revolvers for most officers when I was first sworn in 1972. Only a handful of guys had the money for a Colt Python. I walked into a K-Mart on Dixie Highway in suburban Louisville in the early seventies, and they were trying to sell a blued Python for $125.00. It was WAY out of range for me then.
Smith has certainly had their share of the LE market for a lot of years, that is until the 9mm caught on in LE circles. Sig, Beretta, and a lot of others really hurt Smith's standing in the market. Then, that disaster of a deal they struck with Clinton when he was President just about put them out of business. However, they have certainly come back stronger, especially with this 1911. Everyone who owns one seems to be thrilled beyond words with theirs. As I mentioned in a previous thread, accurate and reliable seem to be the two key words of describe this new 1911 they have manufactured. However, I do not believe they have landed any LE contratcs with it as of yet, have they?
I am looking at one and a Colt. Do not know whichone will win. I just wish they would find a cure for this 1911 disease I seemd to have caught. Doggone, everyone on the forum suffers from it in one way or the other, don't they?

Yep bill may, and it is contagious. I think that anyone in LE started with a Smith. I hated it when a Beretta 92 with two extra mags replaced two speed loaders and good training. Spray and pray. When the 1911 was approved, Colt was it. Well Colt was really it! Now everyone makes 1911's, both good and bad. The S&W 1911 is really top notch. You can spend more and get the same results. The Sc is lighter and with a good IWB holster and belt combo you almost forget it's there. As far as Colt goes, they are still the one that others are measured by.

As I said, I started with a 4-inch blued model #10 .38 and was thrilled to get my first .357. Only one person on my small department was allowed to carry a cocked-and-locked nickled Colt .45 (a Sgt.). The rest of us had to carry revolvers. A .45 was a big mystery to me then. A lot of the old timers who were not very gun sauvy told me that the .45 wasn't safe.
We have come a long way in some respects, and in a lot of ways we have not progressed at all. I still say a good revolver or a .45 in the hands of a highly trained, skilled, brave person beats 14-18 "spray and pray" rounds any old day.
I am glad to see Smith re-enter the LE market in a big way with this new .45 ACP. They were down for awhile, and now seem to be on the way back up. I think this new .45 has something to do with that.
I was a sworn police officer at 19 years of age (Ky. allowed that for a short period back in the 70s). 99.9 per cent of the cops carried a Smith revolver of some type (.38, .357, and the .44 when Dirty Harry came on to the scene).
Good training, tactics, and the willingness to do the job at hand beat `18 rounds any day. I will stick to my .45 1911 pistols and, when required because of departmental policy, a Sig P-220 in .45
The members of this great forum may disagree on which 1911 is best, and debate double-action vs. single action all day, but they all agree on one thing - the .45 is the only way to go in most cases.

25th June 2006, 10:59
Bill, the 1911 has a bit of a specialized niche in todays LEO market. Issue guns and tactics are usually decided by the departments liability lawyer rather than the guys out there getting their uniforms dirty.
S&W like most of the US firearms companies got caught sleeping when those upstart Glocks showed up. But they are coming back in a big way. I have heard nothing but good comments about their 1911s, and their M&P line of pistols and AR15's are getting great reviews from folks that have BTDT. The M&P pistol is already stealing some business from the euroguns.

Bill May hit it on the nose. The .45 is an excellent cartridge. I do not think that 1911's are for everyone. It is what I prefer. The Sig P220 is a fantastic semi-auto. Given the choice, I selected the 1911. In my experience with S&W, I would recommend the 1911's from them. My favoritism with the 1911 started in the military. So when asked about my opinion of the S&W 1911's, I give them a thumbs up.
I even like the Beretta 92. I like the 96 better. I just do not have trust in the 9mm.

Just to let you guys know I am also a guitar player and my brand there is also the best Martin. You are correct with you point out that often firearms selection is made by the agency's legal advisor or the Chief (neither one knows a thing about firearms). Sad, but true for most LE departments.
My agency does not authorize any cocked-and-locked semi-auto (1911 or Hi-Powers). It issues a Glock .40 S & W model #22. I would love a new Smith 1911, but I do nto think it will happen with our current Sheriff. We have a metro Louisville PD, and they do the SWAt work. They do not use 1911 style pistols either.
What a shame that those with no knowledge are so scared by a cocked-and-locked pistol. Apparently this new Smith 1911 would make both an excellent SWAT pistol and duty sidearm. I do have the option of carrying (and I do) a Sig P220 in .45 off-duty. I have two of them (older models from Germany).
I am really starting to get an interest in this new Smith 1911. Must be quite the pistol! I would like to see the new S & W Co. (the firm, not the pistol) really gain in the market. You are correct when you say that they were caught sleeping when Glock hit the market here in the U.S.
I have no complaints with my Glock, but as I said before, I cut my teeth on a Smith revolver. Those were the days when a Smith revolver was really a Smith revolver (pinned barrel and recessed chrage holes in the cylinder), deep bluing for a finish and beautiful wood grips. Yep, those were the days. I still have that love of a deep blue finish on a weapon. While SS is much more prudent for LE work, that deep blue is a beautiful thing on a 1911 pistol.

Ky Nimrod,
I agree with the others who have written that the S&W is worth waiting for. I have a S&W 1911Sc (4.25 inch barrel/alloy frame), and it's a fine gun. S&W has been making fine firearms for a long time, and some are masterpieces. (I have a K22 that's over 50 years old -- five screw frame and pinned barrel -- that's like a Swiss watch.)
BTW -- congratulations on living in a wonderful part of the world. My wife and I spent some time in Lexington and the surrounding country some years ago after going to the Kentucky Derby. It's one of our favorite places. (And Bill May -- we like Louisville also.)

Frank: I take it that you probably left some of your hard-earned money in Louisville if you went to the Derby. I usually attend with 140,000 of my closest friends.
Being in law enforcement, I usually work pretty hard for the two week period that comprises Derby time around here. We start two weeks before the Saturday Derby (always the first Saturday in May) with Thunder Over Louisville. A $2 million dollar fireworks show at the end (biggest/longest in the world). Around 800,000 attend. It is a 12-16 hour day, depending upon the number of arrests made.
Ky. Nimrod seems happy with that new Smith 1911. I must stop hanging on this thread, or I will end up with one, too. I can't affod to run with you big dogs.

Frank: Thanks for leaving us in Louisville/Kentucky some of your hard earned money. We appreciate it. If you went to the track, did you walk away a winner?
Derby time around here is a two-week party. I usually have to work, since I am in law enforcement. But it is always good to see 140,000 of my closest friends having a good time. On occasion, some of them get pretty wild and I have to ask them to stay a little longer than others. Sometimes, I get one of my friends (usually a Judge) to have a little talk with them the next morning at his place downtown.
In all seriousness, we start Derby off two weeks before with what we call Thunder Over Louisville. An airshow, all day eating and picnicing, and that night a $2 million dollar fireworks show (the largest and longest fireworks show in the world). That's the kickoff for Derby. Usually about 750,000-800,00 attend, and it is a loooooooong day! 12-16 hours if you're lucky.
Ky. Nimrod sure seems happy with Smith 1911. I have to stop hanging around this forum. It's costing me too much money. As John and some of the members have repeatedly said, this 1911 fever can not be cured. To paraphrase John Rockafeller, "How many 1911s does it take to keep a man happy? Just one more!" Frank: Thank you for those kind words. Been a long time since someone said something nice. I truly appreciate it.
I have found this forum to be about the best on the internet. John's hard work, and the work of Hawkmoon and the other Administrators/Mentors, and some of the knowledgeable shooters liked Hunter, make me want to sit down and talk and learn each night. As a matter of fact, you all are correct. I am starting to get the strong urge for a Smith 1911.
I learned a long time ago to appreciate the skill, wisdom, and knowledge of others who have been there and done that. They learned the hard way. A lot of the folks on this forum have been more than generous to share their time and what they have learned over the years. I try to absorb as much as possible. The wisdom out here is something else.
Having survived a few armed encounters over the years on the streets, I have tried to add something to a lot of the posts here. I find that most of the people here are pretty skilled and knowledgeable about handguns, the use of force, etc.
Garret: I always enjoy your comments, too. I feel as if, when I am on this forum, I am sitting on the back porch, drinking lemonade, with friends and discussing guns or the day's shooting. I feel very comfortable here with our members.
Frank: If you broke even, consider yourself lucky. A lot of those at the track race day lose a lot of money on those ponies. Yes, you have been away from Kentucky a long time. Maybe that can be rectified in a few years. You are always welcome.
I do know that the more I am on this thread, the more I want one of those Smith 1911s. You know, a man can never have too many 1911s. I am always afraid of being caught with less than a half-dozen! LOL

I had to look on S&W's website to see what you meant.
The DK model has the competition square face trigger instead of the standard round trigger. I've never shot one so I can't speak to how it feels. Mostly you will only see that on game guns used for IPSC or IDPA matches. Maybe one of our folks that competes can give you a comparison.

GarrettWC: Thank you very much.
Frank: It is, indeed, a long way from northern California to Kentucky, but come on out, we'd love to have you. Yes, Churchill Downs is quite historic. Recently, they spent several million dollars on some renovations. As you probably already know, horse racing and thoroughbreds are a big industry here in Kentucky (besides marijuana. It is one of the largest crops we grow, even though it is illegal, that doesn't seem to stop the growers, does it)?
I got some mail from Front Sight, the training academy in northen California. Their special memberships are quite reasonable, but getting out to California (even though the courses are free for a lifetime) is a small problem for me. Airfare and a couple days in a motel (and food) may be a little more than I want to pay, offsetting the savings from the lifetime membersight. Do you know anything about Front Site and its founder? He advertises in all the gun magazines and LE journals.
And yes, I still want a Smith 1911 thanks to you all.

My understanding is that this trigger is from his preference. It does look a little funky. I have never shot one but they do feel a little different. I held my first 1911 in 1972 and in all of the models that I have shot, I really like the feel of what is on the standard model. My favorite is the trigger on the old Series 70 Colt Gold Cup.
I am surprised about the going price, I thought they would be higher. I can't see Doug being associated with something that is not "Top Notch". The two-tone finish is sweet too.

:) It may have been their demo: display gun I don't know but it was priced at $850.00 for sure. I have heard that Mr Koenig is a sight to watch on a corse. The shooting league down here is just straight up target but, it's still fun. It is held at the Police Hall of Fame. I am going to try to get in it this fall. It will be fun. :)

Bill,
I’d love to see Churchill Downs since they’ve refurbished it. My wife is quite a horsewoman. She’s been around horses most of her life, and some has rubbed off on me. After the Derby, we spent some time in Lexington, and my wife had wrangled invitations to some of the more famous horse farms.
And we still talk about a restaurant we found in Louisville – Johnny E’s. Do you know it? Is it still there? They served great fired chicken as we recall (and I enjoyed their burgoo).
I’ll pass on the marijuana though. I do occasionally enjoy another “agricultural” product from your great State. (Pardon me while I take another sip of my Old Forester.)
As to Front Sight, I have no first hand experience; but a couple of my shooting buddies have taken classes there and think well of the training they’ve received. I will probably be going there later this year or early next. We had an auction at our club to raise money, and I bought a certificate for a class there.
Front Sight is no longer in California. It started here, but moved to Nevada – not far from Las Vegas. And I’ve heard that Dr. Piazza is having some legal problems with some people who bought memberships but who are now dissatisfied for some reason. I don’t know the details, and there are two sides to every story.
I’ve trained at Gunsite, just north of Prescott, Arizona, and I can recommend it without reservation. About five years ago now I took their five day basic handgun class. About half of that class were LEOs. And just last March I took their five day general rifle class (http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?t=13272).
I sometimes joke about “frittering away money on food, clothing and shelter when there are guns to buy”, but I know that our first responsibility is to our families. The guns are bought only from any extra available after our obligations are attended to. But I do hope that you find a way to get your Smith.

Bill's left town for a few days so I'll jump in as surrogate since I live near him.
I think you're talking about John E's on Bardstown Road and yup, it's still there.

Thanks Garrett. Looks like there's yet another good reason to plan a return trip to Kentucky.

Hey All;
I found a S&W 1911 on Guns America and I wanted some advise on it. It is one of the 2003 model 108282s and it has, according to the owner, had only one magazine worth of ammo fired through it. He wants $594.00 for it and ship to an ffl for transfer that will cost $ 15. The price includes the shipping costs should I go for it or run??? I have to let him know by Monday. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

You will have to get a dealer or someone with a FFL in your home town to receive it and they charge you also. Prices very among dealers and people with a FFL. I would say you are looking at another $15 to $25. I have a #108282 and gave $600 for it used. The price is not out of line it's just getting all the little stuff taken care of. I really don't like buying site unseen but that doesn't mean nothing if you are buying from someone with a good rep. :)

KY Nimrod,
Is it the stainless steel frame and slide, 5 inch model with fixed sights? Is it a model that you want?
The price seems good. I'm a little curious about why the owner only fixed 7 or 8 rounds. If it's a gun you want, at this price it may be a good buy. But while I certainly have bought used guns, I personally am a little uncomfortable buying one sight unseen. And I prefer to do business with a dealer whose reputation I know or could check out. Have you been able to find out anything about thr seller’s reputation or past dealings on GA?
I guess I'm just a little over cautious since I'd expect to pay more for this model with so little mileage on it.

All;
I did something yesterday that was bad. I went in to place the order for my new S&W and ended up buying a Kimber Custom II instead. I may be going to nullify this deal tomorrow, shop was closed today. I must've lost my mind!!!! I let the owner of the shop, who is a Kimber fan, and the rest of the guys working in the shop convince me to make the purchase. I think I should have stuck with my first choice I will keep you posted.

:) Kimber Custom II is a good choice too. Now that you have it you can start to save up for that S&W and get it also. Far be it for me to knock another brand. I never shot one and can tell you nothing about them except I know they make a good gun. Sell the wife on her getting a S&W. Things will work smoother that way. Enjoy the Fourth and have a good day. :)

Thanks Baldy I'll give your suggestion about the wife a try and see what happens, or maybe I can give her the Kimber and get me a S&W. That's what I did with the Rossi 357 I just bought last month, I gave it to her and then bought the Kimber.

I agree with Baldy. It's hard to say that you went astray. Kimbers have an excellent reputation.

Kimber's are great guns also. I have owned two and they were both exceptional. I still have a TLE II. After tossing the factory mag in a drawer and replacing it with Wilsons everything is good. My first was a Royal and I really wish that I hadn't sold it. I do like my S&W 1911PD. You will do well with either gun.

GarrettWC and Frank:
GarrettWC, thanks for standing in for me. Yes, I am back after about nine days in the Florida sun, sitting on the beach catching up on my reading. Remember, some magazines can be read instead of loaded. I subscribe to several magazines and journals, and vacation time is a great time to catch up on reading of these great magazines.
Frank: Yes, GarrettWC us correct. That is John E's on Bardstown Rd. at Hikes Lane. Great food. Ex U of L coach Denny Crum (that old UCLA-John Wooden-reject LOL) eats there quite a bit. Come on back for the Derby and we'll go to the track and pretend we're somebody important. Watch the girls and spend a few buxks on the horses. My Derby pick just crossed the finish line yesterday. LOL
KYMINROD: Kimber is a great pick. Keep it and save for another Smith tomorrow.
Gteat to be back with my brother and sister forum members. I missed y'all

Bill,
I just might have to take you up on that. Of course I'm still waiting for the horse I bet on in the 2004 Derby to finish. And I've got to be kind of careful about ogling the girls -- my wife is pretty handy with her 12 gauge.
Welcome back.

Hey All;
I have been visiting other threads and post others elsewhere but I thought I'd check back in here and let you know I am once again in the market for a new S&W 1911 and I am most likely going for a 108282. This came about because of two experiences I had recently. 1) I talked to Kimber and had a Custom Shop Rep talk to me like I was a dog so that put me off with Kimber and 2) I was cleaning my old 22 blued revolver and noticed how the Blueing was wearing off the gun. I know this is enherent with a blued gun but it made me think I should go stainless for the durability of it so I am doing just that and I'll let you know what happens next. have a great weekend ALL and Lord Willing I will check back in with you Monday afternoon. BTW all of you join in with me in celebrating, my dad reached 72 Thursday July 27th and the Drs all agve him only 6 months in 2000, We all Praise The Lord for this BLESSING!!!!!!!!!
