After surfing a ton of pics, here, I'm thinking I'm partial to the contrast.
Still haven't got the "right" sights, After hitting 8" to the right at 20 yards, I drifted the sight to the left to the point of overhanging...argh. Seems the front post was a 4:45 job, its off to the right a good 2 degree's!

I was actually thinking about that earlier today when pointing out some places to get ebony grips elsewhere in the forum. Good thinking, it'll look great!

Hogue makes a superior grip in a variety of exotic woods...they are the grip supplier to Wilson Combat...unfortunately, they have a back log of over 5000 grip orders, and trying to buy from their site will result in an e-mail stating there will be a 9 week or more wait for ANYTHING you may want...I am partial to ebony since it is the perfect compliment to SS pistols, smooth or checkered.

I want the ebony double diamonds myself. Great looking piece, CWG. I was wanting to order the Houge's but I don't know if I want to wait that long. Mine's a SS Mark IV also.

Yup, cant wait, I can make my own. Especially when I see ebony grips going as high as 100 bucks.
Ebony should be about 20-30 bucks for a slab, and just my time

p.s. my finger tips are still black from whateverthehell stain I used..geez, "stain" shoulda looked it up before dipping my hands in it. I dont mind the color as much as its been reduced to a dark gray and looks like parts of my hand died LOL

If your Colt isn't insulted by the source, The S&W on-line store has smooth ebony grips for $37.00. I've seen these on an associates Kimber, and they are nice grips.

Nice grips, but real pricey.
I'm a stockmaker by trade, so making a set wont be too hard.
I'm just trying to figure out a checkering pattern waiting for material.

It would be worth looking for Hogue grips locally, or just waiting...I see absolutely no reason to spend a $100 or more for grips, unless they're real elephant ivory...Hogue ebony grips:

Smooth - $24.95

Checkered Double Diamond - $39.95

....who Hogue supplies wood grips to; you are better off buying Hogue branded, since a checkered double diamond wood grip would be $39.00...the same grip, with a Wilson Combat Logo medallion will set you back $59.00...Ed Brown sells their coco bolo double diamond sans medallion for same as Hogue (they get a deal, obviously)...Hogue will also make a cut out on the grip so that you can put your own Colt medallion...now, if someone would just make a Springfield Armory medallion....hmmmmmm.

Hogue makes excellent grips. Several wood selections and patterns. If you don't mind the wait.

Nice looking Colt you have and interesting choice on grip panels. Were you able to get the front sight squared away?

Nope, its off to the right side by a few degree's.
Looks like whoever that set it up in the jig/fixture, didnt align it correctly, punched the hole maybe 8-15 thou off to one side.
Not an easy fix.
Its zero'd at 20 now, nice groups offhand horizontal dispersion about 1.5" and vertical...well..its been awhile since I shot. About 6-7". Its either me pulling with my pinky, or hamfisting it down anticipating recoil. Been dry firing quite a bit and it seems much better.
Had a number of first shot jams (first round fires correctly, second round is picked up- but doesnt feed all the way in, a slight tug on the slide and it chambers), could be limp wristing it from my revolver bullseye shooting days, but polished feed ramp to a mirror, stoned the mag catch, deburred a couple of high spots inside the mag well that were gauling the magazine. Used some synthetic super lube, its been hardly fired, still breaking in the barrel too.
More shooting tomorrow maybe. The rear sight is funky- the right rear white dot is nearly over the firing pin! Classic 5 to 5 Friday gun.
But, ya know whats odd, I've owned 1911's before, a POS llama, a star, an argentinian clone, an autoordnance, and a sig 220, but I am digging the Colt. Absolutely love it, want another one. Got a rifle for sale my website that will probably finance another Colt of some kind.
BTW, that lady who tells ya what year is on vacation till next week.

I hear you on the Colt obsession. John calls it Coltites. I put up one of my pick ups for sale today due to a phone call I got from my Colt contact and what he will bringing with him to sell at the next Raleigh N.C. gunshow. I have my eye on a few ones right now just waiting for the right time. It ain't a cheap hobby but it sure is a rewarding one.

It's true. I currently have 3 pick ups and really only need 2. I have a 1979 1 ton Ford on 44" Super Swampers that was my project truck many years ago. I used to run the local mud sling in it when I was younger. Let me tell you that is an expensive hobby and so I decided to let some one else have that headache. I used to be play all day Saturday and fix all the stuff you broke on Sunday and I really ain't into that anymore. I had been on the fence a while about selling it when I spoke with my Colt contact the other day and he has a few nice Colts he has acquired recently that he will be bringing to the next Raleigh show so that helped me decide. Besides I would rather have a few nice Colts than a third pick up anyway.
