View Full Version : Colt Gold Cup National Match

It is no secret here that I am into Colts and have a thing for the Gold Cups. I have been searching quite a while for a Series 80 Gold Cup National Match in polished stainless steel. I had kinda put that on the back burner when warnrain posted pictures of one he had found a little while back exactly like I was looking for so again the hunt was on. I tried several gunshowes and called every Colt connection I have and still not even a idea of where one was. I had been looking on gunbroker all the while and one did finally show up exactly as I wanted with the spur hammer and standard grip safety. I had not bought from an online gun auction before so I was a little sceptical about the whole deal. After a few emails with OD and warmrain (thanks yall) I decided to take a chance. Well I took delivery today of the Colt I bid and won last Saturday and I am well pleased. I have shot it a few time behind the house and it functions great with 185 LSWC. I hate to post auction pictures but that is all I have right now but the Colt looks better in person than the pictures show. No regrets here. Thanks, Hunter

Now you've got me hanging out on Gunbroker looking for a GC in Bright Stainless.

I wish I could do that, about you John? ;)

I don't have any neighbors real close so I can get away with testing a new pistol or checking out a new handload formula with a few rounds. If I shot 50 rounds in a hurry there might be something said but it is nice to be able to do a little testing before the range.

being left-handed and an affection for discontinued quality long guns, the best way is to stop yourself.
I've found deep, almost religious calm lasting for weeks after a good purchase.
Find one, buy it- Thats my sound advice

Yes sir it did. I had planned to stay home in hopes of being able to place the winning bid. I was not very optimistic on being able to get the Colt with my budget of $1250 because I though it would go higher than that. I got it for $1242 which I though was a fair price. I will give her a good test run in the morning. :D

Yes sir after close to 100 rounds 185 LSWC with 6.1gr of Unique I will be keeping this Colt. Accuracy was great! The pistol functioned flawlessly with out a hitch. I even shot some store bought 230 ball and mixed in with the lead she ran great with 7 and 8 round magazines. I initially figured on shooting this Colt every now and then but I think my mind has changed. She shot as good as my Gold Cup Trophy and for a 15 year old pistol I am thrilled. I had really cleaned it up real purty and she got some attention from the other folks at the range. Well I hate to ramble and she is waiting on me for a bath but suffice it to say another Colt to the safe and I have never been anything but 110% satisfied with every one. My HBarr also shot excellent at the 100 yard line. I can't wait to get another 1911!

Sort of gets me all teary-eyed about what a great country we live in. Can you imagine living in Lower Slobovia or somewhere where you couldn't even OWN a gun, much less find exactly the one you want and then take it out in the backyard to crank off a few handloads ? ?

Nice, nice, weapon, my friend. I am happy for you.

Hunter
18th June 2006, 19:34
Thank you dogdollar and Joni. dogdollar you make an excellent point that should be remembered and not taken for grained. Sometimes I get all caught up in finding my next Colt that I do not even think about the many that cannot own personal firearms or are limited in what they can have. We truly are lucky and I do think about John and him not being able to own only 2 centerfire weapons. I could not imagine having to choose between 2 of my Gold Cups much less 2 of any of my centerfire weapons. John bring your family here we will make room and get you started on a great Colt collection.

Colt calls the finish on Hunter's GCNM (and the Colts pictured in my camera icon) their "Ultimate" stainless finish. Not all polished stainless finishes are done to "bright", most are polished to a lesser gloss (like the NAA and Kahr under the same icon...

Hunter,

Yours is about 1200 away from mine and of the same year 1991.

It most certainly has the 11# or 12# spring meant only for light loads. My buddy's actually malfs with 230 gr. hardball. Best to work up a light load, something like what they were built for...

If you use Unique I can offer a couple suggestions for 200 gr. FMJ or LRN.

I am so happy you took the chance, did this, and ended up with a dream GCNM...!

Best, Cars

Thanks Warmrain, so if I understood correctly the Ultimate finish is the brightest (mirror) finish!

Yes okcorral1881,

As bright as bright nickle or chrome. Click the camera icon in this post. The Colts are Ultimate Bright, the other two have bright flats.

You are correct I do believe it was a 12 pound spring but I have already changed it to a 16 pound Wolff. I did shoot some 185 LSWC with 6.1gr of Unique with the 12 pound spring and it was slick as glass and recoil was very minimal. I will keep the 12 pound spring handy for light target loads but I plan to keep a 16 pound installed as I might include this Colt in my rotation of a carry pistol for special occasions. I do plan to load some 200 LSWC so any insight on a load for Unique would be appreciated. Thanks for the tip and advice. She really is a great Colt but then ain't they all.

Thanks tc',

Fortunately my wife is also into the sport. The GCNM is primarily hers (she let's me shoot it...). It's particularly nice because she is small of frame and can rack the GCNM with its lighter spring. And, my light target loads for it allow her to shoot for a reasonable time before fatique.

I'm lucky to have found both of those... (well, three counter her!).
