Is there a rating system for different 1911 manufactures, as far as a top brand name, or are they all the same as far as reliability. If you had to. Who would you put at the very top of the list, and who would be on the very bottom ?

Thanks Van

That would be interesting, but I don't think it would be feasible. Using the Ford vs Chevy argument as an example, there are too many opinions to rate each fairly. There are too many "categories" of 1911a1's. Some are best for "game" playing and not the best for self-defense, and then you have the opposite of those that may be outstanding for self-defense, but not for competition.

It would be nice for reference, but you have one of the greatest references at your fingertips now. Forums are a great source of information (Unbiased plug of John's forum). Review and look at the problems each are having. But also look at how the manufacturers are fixing the problem.

Well said ! But, in reality there lies personal preference

I'll try to make it simple for you ! On the table lies four 1911's : Colt Gold Cup, Kimber Gold Match II, Springfield Trophy Match, and a S&W1911.

You will be given 250 rounds of 230 gr. fmj. Wolf Ammo . You will have to shoot a 12" target 25 yards away with all 250 rounds. You will be judged on accuracy. If there is any malfunctions at all you will be eliminated.

Winner get's $50,000

Your choice of pistol in order of preference ? :) :) :)

Wait a minute, that involves reliability and accuracy! That changes your original question. Obviously not enough to disqualify it, I understand what you are saying.

I wouldn't have a problem picking any one of them, especially since I haven't ever fired anyone, so I'll let others answer your question.

IMO, too many people expect accuracy "out of the box". I have seen people put money on some of the nicest guns out there, and when they can't group with it, they complain about the gun. I have an old parkerized Springfield Armory that (when I do my part) will keep 5 shots touching at 15 yards. It is like buying an auto. Some people will buy what they think is the best and are disappointed when they are restricted to 70 mph on the freeway. A Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, GMC pickup, motorcycle, VW Beetle will all do 70mph, but the driver is the one who has control. And if the driver does not know how to drive, then it doesn't matter what steering wheel he/she sits behind.

I agree with Stumbler, most of the folks I know, can't take full advantage of the inherent accuracy of their pistols. Unfortunatelly, those shooters who indeed need better accuracy than what is offered from an out-of-the-box pistol, are very few.

I remember some years ago, when I was complaining that my Sig Sauer 226 was not grouping all that well. I believed what I was saying. And then, one day, another shooter insisted that my ex-wife who was coming with me at the range for years but had never shot a gun before, would step up and get involved. So she got the 226 and fired 10 rounds in the bullseye, all of them in a circle not larger than 10 cm in diameter, at 25 meters! Now, I know my limitations. Caffeine and cigarettes are the culprit.

Oh yes, and if you wonder what happened with my ex-better-half, she ended up being a member of the Greek Female National Team. And I ended up divorcing her! I had to clean her Walter GSP after every match. LoL

For those observing. I can assure you that If I was in a gun shop with John or Stumbler to purchase one of the above , so I could enter the contest, . It would be more than
"pick any one of them, their all good"

Thanks anyway : Van

Okay, I'm laying my neck out:
1. Kimber
2. Springfield
3. Colt
4. Smith

(Now if you had the 5th option of me supplying my own firearm, that would be 1st. I know what mine will do, I can only guess on the others)
