View Full Version : Older Colts are a BARGAIN!

I just picked up a pre 70 commercial that is actually LIKE NEW for $1000! (yes yes, pics on the way). This post is not so much about my aquisition, as it is a general question.
Why oh why would someone pay 2.5, 3 maybe 4 times that much, for a Wilson, Brown, LB etc. I can understand sombody wanting good quality and not wanting a $400 model. I can understand sombody wanting to avoid the $1000 MIM models out there (though arguements can be made that MIM is no prob on some parts). I can even understand why people would choose to avoid newer Colts (series 80, post Union, you know the arguments).
What I can't understand is how sweehearts like the one I just picked up aren't going for more than a SuperHawkTacticalEliteFire.
I'll add this just to keep us on topic. :wl:

For the name, most likely, though I suppose the work could be worth it. I wouldn't know. It seems like a good gunsmith could spit out a similar 1911 for around $800, but if you want guys like Ed Brown to do it instead, it'll cost you.

rOuge that is the same question I have been asking myself for years. Why would you spend $2500+ on a 1911 from a custom shop when a Colt can be had for a grand (give or take)? In my opinion any Colt that you can afford is a bargain and worth having. I would not trade any of my Gold Cups for two Wilson's, Les Baers, or Ed Browns 1911s. I understand they are fine weapons but if it ain't a Colt it ain't for me.

That's just it. You can hire the firm to do the work, but you never know who it is really doing it. I understand Browns are supposed to be family emplyees only. I dunno that this makes a difference. After all, everybody is different and family name doesn't equal skill.
Congrats r0gue!

Each to his own wants and budget, some just want what they think is the best and can afford it.I've always thought it came down to buying to impress people and I'm not talking about top dog shooters.Reminds me of the guy who used to golf with our group for years, there was an unspoken thing he had to out do me in everything,I buy a truck,he gets a more optioned one, that kind of thing. He spent untold amounts on new top of the line golf equipment and never can I recall him besting my score.
I have a NRM series 80 and the fit, finish, bluing and its ability to bang out the black is amazing.I grow tired of the haters that say they are junk. They are either passing on heresay or can't shoot.

You know, this is something a lot of us Colt 1911 lovers do not like to advertise since we would like to buy more, and more, and more.

Shaddap. You guys have to hold off until I hit 21 and can start hoarding myself. If you don't, there won't be any left and Dakota will have somehow acquired every shiny Colt out there, forcing me to buy a "SuperHawkTacticalEliteFire" to compensate for not having a Colt.

The pre-Series 70s are great bargains. I try to find the unaltered ones but if the price is right a trip to Wayne Novak can produce a honey of a 1911 from one that's been altered.

You are on the right track for such an early age. When I turned 21, I bought an S&W Model 10! Booooring. But it made a good bedside gun for my first apt. Which was not in the nicest section of town.

I feel yore pain...
...I just picked up a Colt 1991A1 Series 80, parkerized finish, with very little wear. Some dremel work at the 6:00 position of the chamber mouth, probably to make semi wadcutter feed in better, but it feeds everything I've tried so far and shoots nicely to point of aim. It had hogue wraparound grips which I left lying on the counter (had a set of checkered wood with the Colt medallion that went on it when I got it home).
I also have a somewhat beat up Colt Series 80 Lightweight Commander that has a nice trigger pull for a carry gun, kind of gives the lie to the claim of "can't achieve a good trigger pull on a Series 80 setup".

Does it look like the barrel on the right? If so, you have the newer "dimpled" throat barrel, it's factory.

That is exactly what it looks like. Makes me feel better it came from the factory that way and it's not the result of some amateur with a dremel.
Thank you for the tip!

When I first looked at my Gold Cup Trophy that throat work gave me a weird feeling but my Trophy was new so I called Colt and found out it is factory (just like OD said) and it was to aid in feeding SWC. My new Colt 1911 in .38 Super has the same throat as does my 1991A1. Yall don't give me a hard time about the FLGR, it was given to me and I used it to be sure in my own mind it did not make a difference. :D

I just picked up a 1966 Commander at a local pawn shop/gun store for $650 in great shape! I love it. Even shot it in a match this past weekend. Just seems to fit my hand better with the short trigger.

Hunter,
Have you had a chance to shoot the new .38 Super yet? If so, how did she do?
And I would NEVER give you grief about that FLGR........... ;)
