View Full Version : Real Ithaca or just a slide gun?

Hello out there,
I just purchased this "Ithaca" 1911A1. I just am not sure if it is indeed an issued Ithaca or a put together Colt frame with an Ithaca slide. The right side of the slide is not stamped with anything. The serial No.11500xx, I believe, puts it in 1943 production. It is GHD marked so I am pretty sure that it is a Colt frame. I realize that Ithaca used Colt frames but the serial number seems a little high. One strange thing is that where it would usually read "U.S. ARMY 1911A1" on the right side of the frame it has been scratched off. I am adding some photos. If anyone out there can shed any light it would be appreciated. I have a 3 day inspection starting today. What would you place the worth at? I thank you in advance for your time.
Thanks again,
Pete
PS- I can't figure out how to add photos right now. If you respond, I will send them to you. petesgr@msn.com

Pete: Based on your description, the frame is Colt. Additionally, while Ithaca did use some Colt manufactured frames in the beginning of their production, all of them had Ithaca assigned serial numbers and external markings.

Value for the pistol you describe is somewhere below $500. To me, it's somewhere well below the $500 mark. Mismatched and refinished is bad enough, but when the markings are scratched out...those guns are pretty well the bottom of the barrel as far as any collector value or interest is concerned.
There are plenty of other good shooters out there for far less money. They may not all be USGI manufacture, but for a shooter...why would it matter?

I'd save my hard earned money and throw this one back and then wait for a keeper. Good luck.

Scott,
Thanks for the reply. I believe that this is a put together pistol and I have opted to return it. I appreciate your time spent.
Thank you,
Pete
