View Full Version : Pieced together??
I just purchased a "Remington Rand" off of GB and i should have checked the SN first but didnt and didn't see any FJA marking due to the current state of the finish..still waiting for it to arrive but here is what i have so far...
S/N 2285XXXX
luckily this will end up being a Father's day gift to dad and he is looking to get a shooter with a remington slide(He had a RR on his ARNG shooting team back in the 70's and also had one at times in Vietnam), it is coming with original barrel, bushing, hammer, trigger, and beavertail off the weapon and some custom parts including 2 NM barrels so i can get it pretty close to original if needed..
Either way i'm sure i'll be happy with it (it's a 1911...hard to not be happy)

First of all, make sure that that hammer can operate properly with the grip safety which is installed on the pistol. Unless the grip safety has been notched (and it's hard to tell from the pictures) this hammer will have a hard time reaching its full travel.
Apart from that, looks like a nice shooter to me.
Thanks John, i'm sure dad will put many a round through it, i am pretty sure it is notched, from convo's i have had with the previous owner, if worse comes to worse i'll put it back to original. My FFL it is being sent to is a pretty knowledgeable 1911 guy, i'm sure we will both go over it with a fine tooth comb.

It's nickel plated?
It should be here next week but, i talked to the prev owner and it has been bead blasted.
Bead blasted and not blued? You'd better have it reblued as soon as possible if you do not want to see rust on it.

First...The frame isn't Remington Rand. GHD is a Colt inspector's mark.(Guy H. Drewry) Rand's inspector was Frank J. Atwood. (FJA) Your serial number puts it at mid-late 1945 production. The last Colt shipped under contract was serial number 2368781.

"bead blasted"
It's in the white? Well, have it Parkerized after you put all the original or correct period parts back on it including an arched mainspring housing w/lanyard loop. Then add a set of plastic G.I. grips and a G.I. mag and you'll be sitting pretty. If the frame is Colt, the gun may have been 'mismatched' as part of normal parts swapping during it's government service life.
Johnny; I read over the thread again and I can't find where he mentioned a 'GHD' mark. How did you find that out?

Then I guess my "Ithaca" is really a Remington Rand with an Ithaca slide, because Mr. Atwood's initials are stamped on the frame. The s/n is 207XXXX, so it must date at 1944. Ve-e-e-ery interesting. Wish I had a decent camera, so I could send some pix. Maybe I'll hit up a coupla friends and borrow one.

Nope. Col. Atwood was also the inspector for Ithaca. While yours may not have originally matched frame and slide, it's at least correct.
I wasn't sure bout the inspector's marks(i thought they may have been faint to before and blasted off) but i thought by SN it was a colt frame (Hallock's .45 auto Handbook) but made the same assumption it was mismatched during it's life, which technically makes it incorrect but, like i said it's going to be a shooter so i'll probably just have it refinished and shoot it...next question, what would be the correct finishes for the frame and slide ( i think they would be different, and if so i'd try to reproduce that)

Thanks Johnny. Had I looked closer at the drawings in my Hallock's, I woulda known that. Sure is a good shooter though. And my apologies to The Colonel; didn't mean to slight his rank. I'm typing this one-handed while saluting with my right.

As a sidenote...Not a thing wrong with mismatched USGI pistols as long as they were done right. It happened a lot during arsenal rebuilds or refinishes.
They're actually some of my favorites as they're usually excellent pistols that run like a Timex watch...and they often can be bought for a fifth of the cost of an original or correct GI pistol. With a little tweak here and there...maybe a little tightening up or a new barrel, and you've got a first-class shooter/carry gun. No serious concerns over the collectible status, though there is a small niche for mismatches...but it's not like you're playin' around with an original US&S. Me? I'll buy a decent one in a heartbeat if the price is right. The secret is to take a serial number list when you hit the shows. Many unscrupulous vendors will represent one as original. Use the truth as a bargaining chip...and you may be able to walk away with a nice hybrid for less than the cost of a matched Sistema.

Ithaca happened to be in Col. Frank J. Atwood's ordnance district rather than Col. Atwood being the inspector for Ithaca. Remington Rand, Ithaca, Remington Arms, L.C. Smith-Corona, National Postal Meter, Bausch & Lomb, and even the M6 knife sheath made by L&C bear the initials of FJA because they were in the Rochester Ordnance District commanded by Col. Atwood.
