Trophy is NIB from reputable dealer I have done business with for $975

National Match is from local dealer and is reported to be a 9.5+ original box and manual.

Both are stainless.

I don't know what the difference is between the National Match and the Trophy...?

Which is the preferred?

I am not sure about the differences, but I had a dealer tell me today that Colt is going to stop making civilian pistols so you better buy both. You don't think he was trying to scare me into buying a Colt from him? Nah!

There is not much differences from the National Matches from the Trophy (keeping in mine if it is a Series 70 or 80). Minor stuff like the triggers are different but function and accuracy are very close. Dealers have been telling me Colt has been out of business for the past 8 years. Funny I have two Colts made in 2005. I have found dealers really trashing Colts here lately (where none are in stock) then in the same breath explain to me why Kimber is the best 1911 that has ever been made and cannot be beat while showing me a cabinet slam full of Kimbers. I have learned that most gun dealers cannot be trusted and will lie to you in order to make a profit. Sad actually.

I just p/u a LNIB 80 GCNM in SS and it was close to the price your dealer is asking for the Trophy. I also got a 1991A1 LNIB also and it was a better deal.

I think either one will do the job. Get both if you can.

I really dont care what people say about Colt or any other brand. I think for myself and try them to make up my own mind either by buying one or trying someones. I also know full well, that you can get a lemon too.

The Gold Cup Trophy is new production. The Gold Cup National Match comes in the original card board box with the styrofoam inserts, serial number SN269xx. Does this make the older pistol a better choice my local dealer has the pistol and I am very regular there, they don't BS me and tell me over the phone it is a solid 99%

What do you guys think?

The Gold Cup National Match would be more collectable than the Gold Cup Trophy but that does not mean it would be a better choice. I think the best thing to do is the the GCNM put it up and shoot it from time to time and get the Trophy for regular range use then you aren't face with the difficult task of choosing. I do not shoot my GCNMs as near as much as I shoot my Trophy mainly because the Trophy is still in production. I save the GCNM for the range if I want to show off a little (if you can believe that). :D

warmrain,
If you can only afford one of the pistols, then the choice is ultimately yours. If I was presented the same choice, I'd go with the National Match.

My advice is usu. the same, to get both. At least I'm not inthe position of having to trade or sell one (in which case I advise to keep the trade and buy).

Since I can only afford one and this is a special gift for my wife it will be the GCNM if it passes muster...

Thanks!

I imagine she will be very pleased with the GCNM. Get some pictures when you can please. I sure do love them Gold Cups.

Do you want to collect or shoot? GCNM has more value to collectors as long as it is unmodified. Differences are as follows; GCNM is 70 series gun so it does not have extra safety parts like on S80 guns, it will have a spur hammer versus the skeletonized hammer found on GCTM, and should have wood checkered grips with Colt logo as compared to the GCTM rubber wraparond checkered grips with Colt logo. I own one of each and find little if any differences in performance. Just pick one and buy it you wont be sorry.

The Gold Cup National Match was available as a Series 80 and could be had with a skeletoized hammer. Also Series 70 GCNM could be had with factory wrap around rubber grips (around 1982 I think) They were made for Colt from Pachmayr and had a gold Rampant Pony medallion instead of the Pachmayr lion.

This one is a MkIV 80 with spur hammer and GI style GS. It is stainless.

We shoot all our guns even though some of them are semi-collectable...

Buy both of them........there's no such thing as having to many guns, especially if the are Colt's.

I could not agree more! Having too many Colts is a myth.

Hunter good points my research supports what you have said but usual configuration was as I stated. Warm Rain that appears to be a skeletonized hammer not a spur hammer?

The GCNM could of been had either way depending on year of manufacture. If you go to gunbroker there is a stainless Series 80 Colt Gold Cup National Match with the wrap around rubber grips that is brand new.

I would try to buy both, but if I could buy only one then I would get the NM. The Trophy is current production so you will be more likely to have another chance to buy one, but a chance at a NM in good condition is sort of rare, at least in my experience, as I am always looking for them.

... And just what would you be willing to pay for a NM in perfect condition?

Paid too much, but a lot less than asking. It is perfect NIB, circa 1991. Have 200 trouble free rounds through it now (light rounds, 6.0 gr. Unique under 200 gr. FMJ RN). It is perfect. Here is a preliminary photo. More to come when it gets cleaned up again... Thanks all!

Thanks man! I really am lucky... And my wife is really taken with it and loves to shoot too. It is now the stable mate of the one pictured in post #12 or under the camera icon in the upper right of my posts... Best, Cars
