Brand new CD officers size model ECS, 1st trip to the range, shooting UMC 230grain FMJ. Had intermittent problems where nose of the bullet stopped at the intersection of barrel and feed ramp. Most times I could not 'nudge' it forward into battery, had to lock the slide back and drop the magazine. The round would still be in the magazine, slid forward maybe 3/16". I was using brand new Springfield mags (dimpled Metalforms). I would slide the round back in the mag and most times it would load correctly when dropping the slide from locked position. Is this a mag problem? I didn't even try the CD mags because I assumed the Springfield ones were better. Does the feed area need attention? there does seem to be a 'step' between the ramp and the barrel. Any help appreciated. I am learning stuff, sloooooowly.

There should be a step between the feed ramp on the frame and that of the barrel. If memory serves me right that gap there, should be 1/32" but don't take my word on that, no coffee in the system yet. Pass your finger over the top of the frame's feeding ramp and see if there is any sharp leftovers there.
If you want to polish your feed ramp, take some emery cloth 400, 600, 800 and polish it using your little finger or a pen. The key-word here, is "polish", you do not want to remove any metal from there, just smooth out the irregularities of the metal surface.

Jeff...Next time it hangs one up...Use a foot-long length of 2X4
to lightly bump the muzzle, straight on to see if the slide snaps to battery.

And that will have to show a weak spring, where exactly? Mag or recoil?

Clue me in on what you're thinking it is? I had it apart tonight and couldn't really find any sharp edges on the barrel or feed ramp but I did find that the slide surfaces were somewhat rougher than I've seen before so I ran a stone along them, oiled them up and worked some snap caps through for a while. It seemed to function better with the CD mags than the Springfield ones, though I don't know what it'll do with live ammo till I try it again. I appreciate any help I can get, still very much in early learning mode.

Too soon to say. Just see if tapping lightly on the muzzle will let it go to battery. If it does, induce another hangup and push down on the chamber to see if that will too...and report back.

I have another "simple" weapon mfgrd in the Phillipines that has never missed a beat. I guess I hoped I would have the same luck with this one. Since I apparently am not having the same luck, I came to where I can get help to hopefully make it right. The title to this forum is 'Gunsmithing troubleshooting and refinishing' which I assume means Gunsmithing, troubleshooting and refinishing a 1911 regardless of who made it. If I had wanted to buy a "lincoln town car" I would have bought one! I have 6 1911's now and a sincere desire to learn how they tick so I can figure this stuff out on my own some day. Almost every person I have encountered on M1911.org has been "bend over backwards" courteous to me and very helpful and appropriately humorous as the situation merits it. You are entitled to your opinion and I to mine. Have a great day! ;)

Nope...but he rightfully expects it to function as intended though.
Luckily, it's usually somethin' simple with these ol' pistols... ;)

I took it apart again and inspected for anything that looked out of the ordinary. I can't see any damage or wear marks on the barrel lugs but it's still really new. I lubed it up and ran through 40 or 50 snap caps without a problem but I'm going to have a couple of days before I can shoot it for real again. I would expect a plastic dead blow hammer to fill in for the board adequately? A wee bit easier to lug around in saddlebags.

Yep. Anything that'll keep your hand clear of the muzzle.

This time I shot 10 mags through it before I got the first FTF and that was when I switched to a Springfield mag. In that mag I had 3 FTF's but was able to "slide" them all into battery. After that I was getting about 1 per mag in random places in the mag (after going back to the CD mag). I was able to use the slide to snap them into battery each time, never had to resort to the 2x4 method. Each time the FTF occured the round was still outside the barrel, sorta looked like they were jammed between the feed ramp and the breechface. Could the weapon have become dirty enough in 60 rounds to cause this? Something else to look for? I'll have it apart tomorrow and look for anything unusual. Anything specific I should be looking at? I've read threads suggesting that FTF's are often caused by a tight extractor, do you think it could be that?
