I've got two Kimber Ultra CDPs; one from 2002 and another from 2004. They are nearly identical with the exception of the ambi-dafety. On the early pistol the roight side is retained by an extension that goes under the right grip panel. On the newer pistol it is retained internally.

My question has to do with the apparent loosenes of the right side safety on the earlier pistol. With the safety on I can wiggle the right side of the safety and there is play in it, the left side is held in place snuggly by the plunger.

On the later pistol the right side safety is held very tightly, there is no sign of loosness.

Is it a function of the earlier design that there is some small play in the right side safety?

Is this something that needs to be fixed and if yes does it require replacment of a part?

That's why they went to the safety with the pin........the newer one. A "regular" ambi safety is only held in place by the little paddle under the grip panel and a tongue and groove that fits the left side pin. There is nothing else holding it so it will wobble a little. Take off the grip and if the groove is a bit loose, it will fall right out.

The newer one is retained by a "dovetail" cutout and the hammer pin. It has no free play. Everything sounds normal unless one of the two sides of the groove on the safety pin where they join is broken off on the older one.

Ah... That makes sense and puts my mind at ease. No, the wobble is minimal, just enough to be noticable and notably different from the newer design. The pistol was purchased new and is lightly used. I have no concerns now. Thanks Kruzr!
