Hi All,

I'm new here in forums but have been lurking around the site for quite awhile. So much so, in fact, that I finally saved my pennies and managed to afford a Colt Commander, (model 04691) and am glad I did.

I spent the weekend at the range with a friend of mine who is a cop with Roseburg PD, and we had a lot of fun....he & I are both quite pleased with the pistol, and burned through a few boxes of ammo testing it out.

However, now that I am back home and away from his expert advice, I've encountered a problem in trying to dissasemble it for cleaning.

Specifically (and I presume this is probably a pretty dumb question, but like I said...I'm brand new to the Colt! :) I can't seem to actually disengage/remove the recoil spring.

Although the bushing rotated easily clockwise per the manual, and the spring & spring cap *appeared* to release properly, the spring itself still appears to be attached to something and will not extend all the way out. Looking in w/flashlight & referencing the manual, it appears that this 'thing' is the Recoil Spring Guide.

Of course, I'm not forcing anything...I don't want to cause any damage, but there just seems to be some trick that is not described fully in the stock manual that came with the gun, or in the other cleaning guides I have downloaded and looked at so far.

In any case, if anyone has some tips for me it would be greatly appreciated. I'm used to revolvers, and so this mechanism is still kind of alien to me....lots more moving parts then I am used to dealing with. I better figure it out, or my gun is going to end up in a pretty sorry dirty shape so thanks in advance!

-->Karl

Howdy karl,
The recoil spring is a press-fit on the guide rod. If the rod is the stub-type, just remove the slide and pull the guide rod and spring out the back as a unit. If it has a full-length guide rod, pull and twist the spring out the front...either before or after removing the slide.

Luck!

Thanks, I'll give that a try!
