I just purchased a Storm Lake match barrel that is 5.5 inches long and is advertised as a drop-in fit into all 5 inch 1911 45 acp.
My initial thought was to have a gunsmith install the barrel at the 5.5 inch length. My thought now is to have the barrel shortened to either 5 or 5.25 inches. My question is: can I have the barrel shortened by a gunsmith to either 5 or 5.25 and not affect the accuracy of the barrel? What do you guys think about shortening this barrel?
Here are the specs of the barrel from the distributor: "5.5" THREADED BARREL IS A DROP IN FIT FOR ALL 5" SLIDE 1911 45 acp AUTO PISTOLS. USES YOUR STD BUSHING AND THREADED PORTION EXTENDS 1/2" FROM BUSHING AT END OF SLIDE . THREADED .575 x 40 TPI FOR MANY STANDARD THREAD ON ACCESSORIES AND COMPETITION COMPENSATORS. THREAD PROTECTOR INCLUDED AS SHOWN..BARREL IS CUSTOM MANUFACTURED FROM 416 STAINLESS STEEL FOR US BY STORM LAKE MACHINE AND INCORPORATES A BROACHED RIFLING DESIGN TO ALLOW THE USE OF LEAD PRACTICE AMMO WITH LITTLE TO NO BORE FOULING WITH HEAVY USE.
Thanks,
Gary
