View Full Version : What to do about feedramp?

Ok, some of you may remember that I have an AMT HardBaller that has had lots of feeding problems. Got it working 99% with FMJ ammo, but it will not feed JHP at all. I am fairly sure that the problem is caused by the feed ramp having two different angles on it, the lower half is closer to vertical than the upper half is. I'm guessing that the nose of the FMJ will allow it to deal with the lower half of the ramp, but since the JHP I have doesn't have the same nose, it just gets stuck. I know that if I lock the slide back after a round has gotten stuck and tip it up some (so the nose is higher) it will feed. Problem is, the next round does the same thing. I'd like to just get the feed ramp welded and re-cut, but my local gunsmith doesn't do that. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can do to solve this problem? Other than not trying to shoot JHP that is.

There is a gunsmith in Wendell, North Carolina that I am sure can fix it. You could have a ramped barrel installed but that would include having the frame machined to accept the ramp. That would not be my first choice.

well, i will be giving him a call come monday more than likely. my 1911 feed great for me with my MF mag, but not with my CMC mags with wolff springs (don't have my MF followers for them yet), but wouldn't feed from any mag for my mom on the first round. although i do think i know the cause for her problem (not slingshoting the slide right and letting her thumb ride when using the slide stop). at any rate, i'm just getting upset with it. i mean my taurus pt24/7 9mm didn't have a single problem in 400 rounds today, but my 1911 had a problem on the 8th round i tried to fire out of it. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm thinking i will have him put a new barrel on it too, unless he can fix it without one. i know it would help if the magazines were held up higher (thats how i got the CMC mags working today). nevermind the fact that all 3 mags i have worked great the last time i was at the range.

If the pistol works OK with one magazine and not with another, I tend to suspect the magazine more than the pistol.

i would agree with you, but i have a feeling that i forgot to mention that it started acting up on every magazine i have after it acted up with the first cmc magazine i tried. not even my prized (and upgraded) mf mag worked right when full :(

well, today at the range with winchester white box ammo it jammed with no rhyme or reason on full magazines. one time a mag would work great, the next time it wouldn't. my local dealer will only charge me $20 to ship it, so i have a feeling it is gonna get shipped out to be worked on soon.

well, after considering my options. i am thinking i will just order a ss essex frame and either a drop-in beaver tail safety, or modify the frame for my current beavertail (although i'd like a little smaller memory bump like my dad's drop-in has). i would go with the essex select frame, but even after adding the price of the drop-in beavertail its cheaper to go with the standard one (plus not have to buy the plunger tube, ejector, and ejector pin). this should also solve the problem i'm having with two of my magazines dropping (i hope). are there any special tools i need to fit my amt slide to a new frame?
hopefully it will also take care of it ejecting the brass at 1:30 or so, and really dinging up the cases.

i know this is old, but after the last time at the range, i decided to try something. if i hold the magazines up as far as they will go, it will feed everything i have to try in it (fmj and jhp). is there a magazine catch/release that will hold the magazines up a little further? thats the cheapest option i have for right now.
