A slide, as the breech face dimensions are different, as the case head between a 45 & Super 38 measure out different. Then there's the extractor.........and sometimes you'll need to change out the ejector as well.

And this thread does not fall under "other 1911's", that is for any 1911 that is not mentioned in the manfacturers area. So I will move this to the general discussion area.

Also forgot.........the firing pin is a different size too.

the firing pin is a different size too.
Except for Springfield Armory who uses the 38super firing pin in both the 45ACP and the 9mm/38 super guns.

Also, maybe the recoil spring. Short answer is, by the time you get done buying all the extras and having them fitted, you could just about buy the whole gun.

To answer your question in a few words:

A new, complete top end (slide with all the internals) plus an ejector.

a different ejector is usually included with conversion kits -- john is correct

The Super frame feed ramp is very different from that for .45.

i dont know about very different -- i have bought conversion kits from colt
for 38sup to 9x23 -- only a barrel, and recoil springs, mags.

and colt mfg conversion kits for 45acp to 38super -- included a slide, barrel, recoil springs, ... -- no frame.

The .38 Super and 9x23 are close enough dimensionally that some guns will shoot them interchangeably; a barrel and perhaps an extractor ajustment could suffice.
I am not aware of a kit to convert a .45 to a Super, or vice versa. It would require a different ejector, as well as a complete top end, and the frame feed ramps are different; shallower on the Super than .45.
