I just wanted to share my joy. These are the only two 1911's I have now. The Colt is a Lightweight Commander, or I might have said that these were the last two I plan on having for a while. If I run across a steel-framed Commander, I'll probably try to trade my LW for it. It's probably because it has a steel frame and just feels better to me, but I actually prefer my AO to the Colt in every way except the 'looky here' factor. Thanks for your time and attention.

I bought the AO NIB recently and haven't had any problems, but I noticed the front sight was loose after I shot it last time. Dottie is sending me a replacement. I could have sent it in, but figured I could handle restaking it. I know many have had this problem with the 1911's from Colt on down, so I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed in it. Would some red Loctite on the tenon be a good idea, or unneccessary? Thanks

edwardyoung:

Nice Commanders! Red Loctite's a good idea for tenon front sights. You can try it, but usually when an existing sight comes loose it's tough to snug it back up (not much available tenon material to hammer into the slot). Luckily the military-type fronts sights are easy to find & cheap.

I like the Colt LW Combat Commander best of all the 1911's there have been. You have a really nice pair of weapons there... As far as the sight goes- I'd just have a gunsmith (or Colt) do the repair - Since you have a backup. :-)

I read on the THR forum that Loctite 640 would hold it in. Shipping it back to AO would cost more than the Loctite. I found a local gunsmith who will do it for $40. I think I'll go that route. Thanks for the kind words.

All in fun, John, - but I'm not sure you appreciate how terribly funny this statement is!

Please PM me your shipping address so I can send you some JB Weld, RTV Silicone and a genuine P-38 can opener. :-)

I can't appreciate the fun of it, since I am not American. I guess, this is something as widely known as Coca Cola?

John;
JB weld is the All-American cure all, fix all. The off-road motorcyclists carry it in their emergency kit. It is possible to patch a broken crankcase with the stuff. When cured, it can be machined like aluminum.

I checked out the site folks, interesting thing. One of our friends here, N7CAV, is sending me a package with a set. Nice knowing about these little gizmos, I carry some rolls of duct tape in my truck, the other American fix-all gizmo!

John, J-B Weld is neither a "set" not a "gizmo." It is a "stuff." I guess it's an epoxy. It applies like a paste, and sets up into a very hard and durable material which, as noted, can be machined much like aluminum.

Now, the P-38 that N7Cav mentioned is a "gizmo." Well known to all American Army veterans, I assume Marines, and perhaps Air Farce and Navy as well. You'll see when you receive it -- although you don't have dog tags on which to wear it, so it loses some of its utility.

Tabasco sauce and chocolate bars, we have here, don't worry about it. US food things are here, almost everything. What we do not have is the hardware goodies you guys have. Did you get my QSL card? Thanks for everything!

Indeed I did, Thanks! I need to make some for Issaquah, WA; I've been here for nearly two years now, so it's time for an update!

To get back on topic . . . Does anyone have the standard style commander hammers in their junk box? I have a Chip McCormick stainless hammer on my blued Series-80; I kind of like the standard commander style hammers, or standard spur hammers on my guns. I'd be glad to buy or trade the parts to convert six pistols to commander-style hammers... Stainless or Blued.
