Hello All-
Wanted to follow-up on my earlier post regarding the performance of my Ciener Basic .22 lr conversion kit. Picked up my brand spanking new Kimber Stainless TLE II today at Ozark Sportmans Supply (Mike and those guys are the best). I had the chance to put 240 rounds through the conversion kit and thought I would share the results.
First thing to note is the fit of the slide to the frame was tight. I believe it will only help the conversion kit once both it and the brand new frame get a little more broken in. I shot CCI Mini Mags, Remington High Velocity, and Federal Maximum Velocity .22 ammo and while there was no real variance in accuracy there was notable variance in the reliability of how the gun fed and cycled.
The CCI fed reliably with only one failure to feed of the very first round of a clip of 15. The rest of the CCIs fed great in both slow and fast fire strings. The Remington twice failed to feed the first round of a clip (both times with the same mag that didn't feed the CCI so it might be the mag). All three instances were easily cleared with a gentle bump of the slide and the rest cycled without issue both slow and rapid fire.
The Federal Maximum Velocity (red box) did not feed well at all. It failed to feed the first round as described above 6 times and outright jammed twice. For what it's worth, the owner's manual discourages use of this ammunition so I guess they know what they are talking about. I had to try though, right?
At this point (175 rounds - I gave up on the Federals) I cleaned and relubed the kit with Tetra lube and went back to the Remington. I went through 65 more rounds of Remington High Velocity (green and yellow box from Wally World) and it functioned flawlessly.
In terms of accuracy, I got 2.5" groups consistently at 25 yards shooting off hand. I am not a great marksman so it's possible the gun is better than that. At 15 yards offhand I chewed the bullseye but at 25 yards it was slightly high and left - still in the black of a standard rimfire target but definitely in the upper left quadrant. Might be me, might be the kit...time will tell. I did not notice any notable variation between the three various types of ammo but as I said I did not shoot much Federal.
For me, this kit was a good value at $204 with two 15-round mags and I am happy. It was really fun to shoot and I believe I'll find myself 'converting' often. I think I'll clean and lube the mags and stick to Remington and CCI ammo. May polish the throat of the barrel and see if the first round feed issues go away.
I hope this helps - thanks for the great site!
