I am wondering, why does the trigger release the saftey shelf on the hammer if the hammer is partially thumb cocked, but not if the slide is partially cycled and then returned to the forward position. I know that the series 80 safety notch is not supposed to be captive, so why will it only release when I thumb the hammer rather than engaging the safety shelf with the slide and then letting the slide come all the way forward. I am just worried that it could be a safety issue. Is this the way it is supposed to be, or did I break something?
Any help and/or advice will be greatly appreciated

First of all, please use proper nomenclature, it took me some time to understand what you are talking about. There is no safety shelf on the hammer, what you are refering to is the half-cock notch or half-cock shelf.

As for your question, when you say "cycle the slide", I assume you mean half-cycle it. The difference being that the disconnector is affected when you cycle the slide and not when you cock the hammer only. I have no non-captive hammers on my guns, so I can't give you any more details, sorry.
